1 Description and Intended Purpose
These instructions are for use by the practitioner.
Please read these instructions carefully before fitting the device.
The term device is used throughout these instructions for use to refer to Silcare Active Cushion/
Locking Liner.
Ensure that the user understands all instructions for use, drawing particular attention to the
maintenance and safety information.
Application
This device is an interface component for use only as part of a lower limb prosthesis.
Intended for single user.
It is intended for moderate to high activity users with well covered residual limbs.
The Blatchford Silcare Active silicone liner provides a cushioned socket interface and is
manufactured from biocompatible materials. Please read these instructions carefully before
fitting the device.
To optimise comfort ensure that the user is instructed in the correct way to handle and don/doff
the device. See Section 9 Donning the Device. Also ensure that they are made aware of how to
maintain the device and to keep it clean for maintaining hygiene as set out in these instructions.
See Section 5 Maintenance.
Activity Level
The device is recommended for Activity Level 3 and 4 users, although may be suitable for all four
activity levels.
The silicone used in the Silcare Walk liners is softer and more flexible than that used in Silcare
Active liners. The softer silicone offers more comfort and flexibility in all directions but may
feel less connected or secure at higher activity levels. Silcare Walk liners are therefore generally
recommended for the less active users (Activity Level 1 and 2).
The silicone used in Silcare Active liners is firmer and slightly less flexible, offering a more secure
interface at higher activity levels. Silcare Active liners are therefore generally recommended for
the more active users (Activity Level 3 and 4).
Note that some high activity users with poor residual limb tissue coverage and/or high sensitivity
may prefer the comfort of the softer silicone Silcare Walk liner to the firmer Silcare Active
liner. Conversely, some low activity users with good residual limb tissue coverage and/or low
sensitivity may prefer the security of the firmer Silcare Active liner to the softer Silcare Walk liner.
Activity Level 1
Has the ability or potential to use a prosthesis for transfers or ambulation on level surfaces at fixed
cadence. Typical of the limited and unlimited household ambulator.
Activity Level 2
Has the ability or potential for ambulation with the ability to traverse low-level environmental barriers
such as curbs, stairs, or uneven surfaces. Typical of the limited community ambulator.
