m) Non-contact alternating voltage detection (NCV)
This function should not be used to detect the absence of voltage in electrical systems. A 2-pin
contact measurement should always be performed for this.
The NCV function (non-contact voltage detection) contactlessly detects the presence of an AC voltage in electrical
conductors. The NCV sensor (K) is located on the front of the multimeter.
A potential alternating voltage is indicated acoustically and with 4 bars in the display. The beep sequence and the
number of bars increases with increasing voltage levels. When no voltage is detected, the display shows the abbrevia-
tion "EF" (for "electromagnetic field").
- Disconnect all test leads from the multimeter. No test leads are required for this function.
- Switch the DMM on and select the "Ω" measurement mode.
- M ove the DMM towards a known AC voltage source front first. Always perform this test in order to avoid incorrect
detection. The DMM starts to beep when there is an AC voltage present. The intensity of the beeps and the number
of bars displayed depends on the voltage level and/or the distance to the live conductors.
- Perform test on the intended wire, etc.
- Turn off the DMM after completing the test.
The highly sensitive NCV sensor may detect voltage when static electricity is present. This is normal and
is not a malfunction.
