Die Baureihe 52.80 entstand ab 1960 aus der kriegsbe-
dingten eher spartanischen BR 52 im Rahmen des Re-
konstruktionsprogramms der Deutschen Reichsbahn.
Ab 1960 wurden 200 Maschinen in den Reichsbahn-
Ausbesserungswerken mit dem Neubaukessel der BR
50.35 mit Mischvorwärmer ausgerüstet.
Heute ist diese Baureihe, die am weitesten verbreitete
Dampflok in Deutschland. Zahlreiche Exemplare blie-
ben erhalten, da diese bewährten Lokomotiven bis in
die 80er-Jahre das Rückgrat des Dampfbetriebs bei der
Deutschen Reichsbahn in der DDR bildeten.
Vor Güter- und sogar Personenzügen waren diese Loks
bis 1987 unentbehrlich. Viele Lokomotiven wurden von
Museumsbahnen übernommen und sind heute noch
im Einsatz

Information about the Prototype
Starting in 1960 the class 52.80 was developed from
the rather Spartan class 52 of the war period as part
of the German State Railroad's rebuilding program.
Today this class is the most widely distributed steam
locomotive in Germany.
Starting in 1960 200 units were taken into the railroad's
maintenance facilities and equipped with new boilers
from the class 50.35 with mixer superheaters.
Numerous examples remain preserved, since this
proven locomotive formed the backbone of steam ope-
rations on the German State Railroad in East Germany
until well into the 1980s.
These locomotives were indispensable until 1987 on
the point of freight and even passenger trains. Many
locomotives were taken in by museums and are still in
use today.
