2.3.2 Error codes
Error message
W101 (011) – A high-
temperature abnormality
was detected in the drive
unit.
W012 – The crank may
be installed in the wrong
direction
W103 (013) – Sensor
initialization could not be
completed normally
E010 – An abnormality was
detected in the drive unit
E011 – System operation
error occurred
E012 – Initialization of
torque sensor failed
E013 – Anomaly detected
in drive unit's firmware
E014 – Speed sensor may
be installed in the wrong
position
E020 – Communication
error detected between
battery and drive unit
E030 – "Total number of
gears" setting for motor unit
doesn't match number of
gears in internal geared hub

Solutions
Do not ride the bicycle with the assist mode
enabled until the drive unit temperature drops.
If the error persists, contact your place of
purchase or a distributor for assistance.
Have your place of purchase perform the
following. Re-install the crank in the specified
direction, then turn the power back ON. If
the error persists, contact your distributor for
assistance
Press the battery power button to turn the
power OFF and then ON again without placing
your feet on the pedals. If the error persists,
contact your place of purchase or a distributor
for assistance.
Refer to the SHIMANO STEPS user's manual
and perform the following. Turn the power OFF
and then ON again. If the error persists, stop
using it and contact your place of purchase or
a distributor for assistance.
Restart the power system. If error persists,
contact place of purchase.
With your foot off the pedal, press the power
switch of the battery to turn on the power
again. Refer to 'Measuring and adjusting the
chain tension', then check that the chain
tension is appropriate. If the situation does not
improve, consult an agent.
Contact local dealer.
Amend position of speed sensor and magnet
unit, turn on power and rotate crank clockwise
until error resolves. This may take up to 100
rotations.
Let your dealer check that the cable between
drive unit and battery is properly connected. If
cable is damaged, replace with new one.
Let your dealer configure motor unit so that
"total number of gears" setting matches
number of gears in internal geared hub.
