Safety on public roads

DANGER
Risk of accident due to insufficient equipment for use on public roads!
The equipment prescribed for bicycles on public roads has the primary intention of ensuring cyclist visibility. If you
as a cyclist are overlooked or seen too late, accidents with serious consequences can occur.
• Your bike must be equipped with all country-specific components required for public road traffic!
• In addition to the risk of accidents, non-compliance with the regulations can lead to the imposition of fines
and loss of insurance coverage.
• For tours abroad or cross-border tours, observe the legal requirements applicable there.
Germany
In Germany the necessary equipment for public road traffic is regulated in the "Straßenverkehrs-Zulassungs-
Ordnung" (StVZO). The following equipment must be installed:
Description
White front light and
white reflector
Red rear light and red
reflector
Pedal reflector
Spoke reflector
Switzerland

technischen Anforderungen an Straßenfahrzeuge" (VTS). The following equipment must be installed:

40
Special notes:
Front light, rear light and reflectors must be fitted when riding after dark or in conditions
with poor visibility. Make sure all lights and reflectors are properly fitted, in good working
order and secured to the bike during operation.
Adjust the front light properly to avoid blinding or impairing the view of other road users.
Lights and reflectors must not be covered.
Both pedals should have front-facing and rear-facing, yellow reflectors.
Fit two spoke reflectors each to the front and rear wheel. As an alternative, you can use
tyres with reflective strips or spoke sticks on each spoke.
Special notes:
Front and rear light can be permanently attached or removable.
The front and rear lights must be switched on as soon as visibility requires it and must be
visible at 100 m at night in good weather conditions.
The front and rear lights must not flash and must not blind other road users.
Lights and reflectors must not be covered.
At least one front-facing and one rear-facing reflector with a surface of at least 10 cm
must be permanently attached. The reflectors must be visible at night in good weather at
100 m when hit by a motor vehicle's full beam.
The pedals should have front and rear reflectors with a surface of at least 5 cm
excludes racing pedals, safety pedals and similar.
