7. Configuring the RAID Levels
7.1. BIOS Setup Utility
The RAID levels are configured via the BIOS setup utility of the RAID
controller. The non-RAID mode can but need not be explicitly selected.
While booting the RAID BIOS checks connected IDE devices; pressing the
keys <Ctrl+S> or <F4> while scanning calls up the BIOS setup utility.
7.2. Configuring the RAID BIOS
1. Create RAID set
- Striped (a)
- Mirrored (b)
a) Striped set (Creating a RAID0)
Auto configuration
The array is created automatically comprising the following parameters:
- block size: 16k
- first drive: drive 0
- second drive: drive 1
- Are you sure? (Y/N)
Confirmation of complete selection. (As no keyboard driver has yet been
installed at this stage, keys Z and Y are interchanged).
Manual configuration
Here the parameters of the array can be set as follows:
- selection of first drive
- selection of second drive
- selection of block size (the ideal setting is determined by the use of your
computer. If, for instance, it is used as a database server, a small block
size is recommended; for video edit, however, a large block size is
recommended. For standard applications a medium setting is best.
- Are you sure? (Y/N). Confirmation of the complete selection.
The hard disks now react like a brand-new hard disk of twice the size, that
is, it now needs partitioning and formatting (for instance with FDISK).
