How to Find Studs
to mount your
Flat Screen TV
1. FINDING THE TV's CENTER POINT
a. Choose the height and location where you will mount
your new flat panel TV.
Measure the TV's overall length (across) and height (vertically)
in the mounted position. Using a pencil, lightly mark the distance
from the bottom of your TV to the floor and the distance from
each side of your TV to the end of the wall.
b. Using a level, draw a center line for each length and height
measurement. Where the two center lines intersect is the
TV's Center Point. Lightly mark this point on your wall.
2. LOCATING WALL STUDS
a. Most flat screen TVs are designed to mount on walls
with a minimum of 2 in. x 4 in. studs. Wall studs should
run vertically inside the wall.
At approximately the same height as the Center Point,
use the Zircon
StudSensor
™
i
20 OneStep
®
to identify your wall stud locations (please see
StudSensor
i
20 instructions—also included).
™
b. Mark the center location of the stud closest to the left of
the Center Point and mark the location of the stud closest
to the right of the Center Point.

c. To better ensure what you have found is a stud, repeat the
same process to mark the center location of studs to the left
and right of the Center Point at approximately 6 in. (152 mm)
above and 6 in. (152 mm) below your first stud location mark.
d. Using a level and pencil, lightly connect the three vertical
points with a "best fit" line. This should indicate the
approximate Center Line of the wall stud.
Note: If your three stud marks do not line up vertically using a level, what
you have found may not be a stud. Please repeat Step 2 and make sure the
wall stud indications are continuous in the vertical direction. Do not mount
the TV on a wall if the studs are not vertically continuous. For helpful hints,
i
please refer to the StudSensor
™
20 instructions.
3. DETERMINING MOUNTING LOCATION
a. Using a level, make a vertical line that extends from the Center
Point to 3
1
⁄
in. (83 mm) above the Center Point. Lightly mark
4
this Upper Ending Point on the wall with a pencil.
b. Using a level, make a vertical line that extends from the Center
Point to 3
1
⁄
in. (83 mm) below the Center Point. Lightly mark
4
this Lower Ending Point on the wall with a pencil.
c. Using a level, lightly draw a horizontal line through the
Upper Ending Point that connects it with both stud
Center Lines. These intersection points are the locations
where the Upper Mounting holes will be drilled.
d. Using a level, lightly draw a horizontal line through the
Lower Ending Point that connects it with both stud
Center Lines. These intersection points are the locations
where the Lower Mounting holes will be drilled.
Now follow the instructions included with your TV mount.
