Using the fluorescence

Assembling the epi-fluorescence attachment
Extract the attachment from the special packaging and place it on top of the stand of the microscope tighten-
ing the locking screw. Then place the optical head above the attachment, setting it with the appropriate locking
screw. In the rear part of the attachment slide the lamp housing and connect the cable to the external power
supply. Open the lamp housing door and insert the mercury lamp (included in the package) between the two
terminals (note that the two poles of the lamp have different sizes so that the insertion in the terminals is unique).
Use and alignment of the lamp
Press the ON/OFF button on the external power supply. Check that the indicator of current after a few seconds
shows a value equal to approximately 4A. If the indicator has a value of 0A, press the TRIGGER button. Place
on the stage your fluorescence sample and focus. Act on the lamp centering screws until you reach the maxi-
mum intensity of emitted fluorescence from the sample. Finally turn the lamp focusing knob in order to achieve
uniformity of lighting on the entire field of view.
Warning: for optimal use of the fluorescence wait 10-15 minutes since power-up in order to al-
low the correct thermal equilibrium of the lamp.
Insertion and replacement of the mercury lamp
If the current drops below 3.5A, replace the lamp. Lifetime is approximately 400 hours.
Take care to cool the lamp for at least 30 minutes before opening its door.
After replacing the lamp, press the reset button to reset the time usage counter.
Unplug any cable from the epi-illuminator, then unscrew the lamp door and open it.
The lamp holder will come out together with the door . Remove the old lamp or the plastic piece (in case this is
the first insertion).
It is recommended to use protective glasses because, if not handled with due caution, lamp
could crash and injure the operator with glass splinters. Also do not touch the lamp glass dur-
ing the extraction out of its box, taking care to not exert pressure on any part of it. Plug one
lamp end into the flexible metal holder (it fits only in one way), and then insert the other end in
the fixed part.
Screw it just enough to keep the lamp in position. If it is too tighten, the lamp could break . Replace the lamp door
in its position and connect the cable on the side of the housing to the external power supply.
