Adjusting the measurement range
5
See Fig.
, A
The measurement range is set to the entire measuring length of the respective sensor
in the default setting.
The control panel for the sensor is protected against improper operation with a defined "tapping
combination". All settings therefore always begin with the following combination: tap (0.5 s),
release (0.5 s), tap and hold (depending on setting, from 2 to 8 s).
The zero point and end value of the measurement range can be adjusted to the stroke
to be measured via the control panel as follows:
1. Move the magnetic piston to the position for the zero point.
2. Tap the control panel (t < 0.5 s) to activate the setting mode.
3. Directly afterward (t < 0.5 s), touch the control panel until LED 1 flashes yellow (t ≈ 2 s).
After you remove your finger, the null point is saved.
4. Next, move the magnetic piston to the end point position (t < 90 s).
5. Briefly tap the control panel (t < 1 s) to save the end point (LED 1 lights up yellow).
For a reset option, see „Resetting the measurement range (zero point, end point) to factory
settings").
If the zero point is outside the measurement range (LED 1 flashes in short intervals),
the teach-in process will be interrupted.
Unfinished teach-in processes will be cancelled after 90 s (time-out). The previously
stored measurement range remains active.
Checking the zero point and end point settings
W Depending on the configuration, after approaching the zero point, a value of U ≈ 0 V
or I ≈ 4 mA is present at the
corresponding output pin.
W Depending on the configuration, after approaching the end point, a value of U ≈ 10 V
or I ≈ 20 mA is present at the
corresponding output pin.
In both positions, the LED 1 must light up yellow.
If these conditions are not met, the measurement range must be re-adjusted. Alternatively,
it can be reset to factory settings.
Selecting the analog output (current or voltage signal)
5
(See Fig.
, B)
O
The current output is activated at the factory.
As analog output, a voltage or current signal can be selected via the control panel.
1. Tap the control panel (t < 0.5 s) to activate the setting mode.
2. Directly afterward (t < 0.5 s), touch the control panel until LED 2 flashes yellow (t ≈ 5 s).
Next (t < 10 s), by tapping the screen again (t < 2 s), you can switch between current output
(LED 2 flashes blue) and voltage output (LED 2 flashes green).
3. Touch the control panel for a longer period (t > 2 s) to save the active settings.
.
The process will be cancelled if more than 10 s pass without an action. The last setting
will remain in effect.
Resetting the measurement range (zero point, end point) to factory settings
5
(See Fig.
, C)
1. Tap the control panel (t < 0.5 s) to activate the setting mode.
2. Directly afterward (t < 0.5 s), touch the control panel until LED 1 and LED 2 flash (t ≈ 8 s).
After you remove your finger, only LED 1 flashes yellow and indicates the system is ready
to be reset.
3. Directly afterward (t < 10 s), briefly tap the control panel (t < 1 s) to reset the sensor
measurement range to the factory settings.
The process will be cancelled if more than 10 s pass without an action. The last setting
will remain in effect.

IO-Link configuration
The IODD files and the "Technical Information" with English and German language
content for the SM6-AL distance measuring sensor can be found in the Media Center
at www.aventics.com/de/media-centre.
You can use configuration software from various manufacturers for the IO-Link configuration.
Before you can use the sensor, it has to be recognized by the IO-Link master. This process
is either automatic or must be completed manually.
O
Please observe the documentation for the IO-Link master used.
So that IO-Link communication is available on pin 4, you have to choose the current output
3
for IO-Link operation. Figure
shows the connection assignment.
(see „Selecting the analog output (current or voltage signal)").

Care and Maintenance

Damage to the surface caused by solvents and aggressive detergents
The surfaces and seals could be damaged by solvents or aggressive cleaning agents.
O
Never use aggressive solvents or detergents.
The SM6-AL distance measuring sensor is maintenance-free.
O
Check the fittings and plug connections regularly.
O
Comply with the maintenance intervals and specifications for the entire system.
9
Disposal
Dispose of the SM6-AL distance measuring sensor in accordance with the currently applicable
regulations in your country.
