• Setting the time zone. To set the time zone, first click „System" and then „Time Zone". Usually
the default setting should be „GMT+01:00 Amsterdam, Berlin, Bern ..."). If this is not the case,
or if the time zone does not match your location, just change it respectively.
• Changing the router password. In order to change the router password click „System" and
then „Password Settings". First enter the current keyword („password"), then the new one two
times. Save the settings.
• Setting up the WLAN connection. To setup the WLAN connection click on „Wireless". Usually
„WLAN" is already activated („Enabled"). If so, click on „Basic Settings". Otherwise select
„Enabled" and save the settings. In the menu „Basic Settings" the mode „Access Point" and the
connection speed („Band") „2.4 GHz B+G+N" are preset. If desired, change the name of the
WLAN („SSID") and set the desired channel („Channel Number"). In any event the channel
should be identical with the one used by your other WLAN devices. Do not forget to save the
settings afterwards. You need to also configure the encryption under „Security Settings". Select
here „WPA pre-shared key" under „Encryption". After that select „WPA2(AES)" or „WPA2
Mixed" and enter a password of at least 8 characters as „Pre-shared key". Save the settings.
• Setting up the firewall. To setup the firewall, click on „Firewall" and check if the setting
„Enabled" is selected. If not, change it respectively.
Connecting/Configuring the device as Access Point
• In case you have already used the device for another mode of operation, please reset it before
configuring the router as Access Point.
• Disconnect the device from the mains supply after restart.
• Connect the „WAN" connector to a LAN connector of your main router that provides the
Internet connection using a 1:1 network cable.
• Change the mode of operation to „Access Point" by turning the switch on the rear of the router
from „Router" to „AP". This automatically disables the DHCP server.
• There are four RJ45 network ports available, to each of which one computer can be connected.
Connect one of the network ports with a 1:1 network cable to the connector on the network
interface card. Use an additional switch, if more than 4 computers are to be connected.
• Connect the router to the mains, using the enclosed wall plug transformer (230V~/50Hz). The
router now starts a self-test; wait for about 30-40 seconds until the test has been completed.
• Switch on your computer, and wait until the operating system has booted completely.
• If the DHCP server is activated in your main router, the Access Point default configuration is
sufficient to provide access to the Internet without making any further settings.
• To adjust the configuration in the web server, you have to assign a static IP address to your
LAN connection. It should have this form, 192.168.1.x. Where „x" is a number between 2 and
249. As subnet mask you have to use 255.255.255.0.
For further configuration, please make sure that the IP address of the router in AP
mode is 192.168.1.250!
• After doing this, you can open the web server via your Internet browser. To do so, enter the
correct IP address of the router (192.168.1.250) into the address line.
• It is recommended to check the settings of the time zone as well as of the WLAN connection. In
addition, you should absolutely change the router password. To do so, refer to the advanced
configuration of the section „Setting up the router (Advanced configuration)".
• Now, delete the static IP address from the LAN settings of your computer and, if necessary,
restart your router, Access Point and PC.
LEDs on the router
Power
Power LED
WPS
Lights when WPS is activate
Wireless
Flashes when WLAN reception is turned on
USB
Lights with connected UMTS modem
Internet
The LED is activated when there is a connection to a modem. It flashes when data
is being transferred.
1-4
The appropriate LED flashes continuously when a computer is connected to a
LAN1-4 connection via a network cable and when there is a data connection
between the router and computer (computer turned on). During data transfer the
appropriate LED flashes.
Resetting the Router
Press and hold in the „RESET" button on the router for more than 10 seconds. Only release the
button again if the power LED starts flashing rapidly. Now the router performs a restart, which
takes about 40 seconds. After this, the router is reset to the factory settings (IP 192.168.1.1,
DHCP on, user name „admin" and password „password"). Furthermore, all of your settings will
have been deleted.
Handling
Only to be used in dry indoor locations. The product must not get damp or wet,
danger of a fatal electric shock!
Never use the product immediately after it has been taken from a cold room to a
warm one. The condensation that forms might destroy your unit.
Allow the device to reach room temperature before switching it on. This may take
several hours. Only then can the transformer be plugged into the mains and the
router put into operation.
Ensure that the insulation for the entire product is neither damaged nor destroyed.
The housing must not be opened! Any maintenance or repair work must only be
carried out by authorised personnel.
Check the product for damage before use!
If you detect any damage, DO NOT connect the product to the mains supply! This
presents a danger to life!
It can be assumed that safe operation is no longer possible if:
- the device is visibly damaged,
- the device does not operate any longer and
- the device has been stored under unfavourable conditions for a long period of time
or
- it has been subjected to considerable stress during transportation.
If the product is not going to be used for a while, unplug the wall plug transformer.
Unplug the wall power supply from the mains socket. Bear in mind that no Internet
access will be possible then, neither does the network connection between the
computers function!
Avoid the following unfavourable environmental conditions at the installation
location and during transportation:
- Excessive humidity or damp
- extreme cold or heat
- Dust or flammable gases, fumes or solvents
- Strong vibrations
- Strong magnetic fields such as those found in the vicinity of machinery or loud-
speakers
When setting up the product, ensure that the cables are neither bent nor squeezed.
Tips & Notes
• Dependent on the Internet provider you use for DSL, further configuration may have be carried
out in the DSL router.
Please note:
In general, when using a router we expressly advise the use of a flat rate or at least a volume
tariff (e.g. 5 GByte/month). The automatic disconnection after a given idle time (e.g. after 10
minutes, e.g. in the router called „Idle time-out") may not always function correctly.
Which means that, regardless of the router setting, the Internet connection is not disconnected
and costs continue to be incurred, even though no Internet browser is running or all the
connected computers are switched off. This can cause very high costs (several hundred Euros
monthly!).
Even if the router does not show this behaviour, a firmware update, or the installation of certain
software on the computer, could cause this to change.
Causes could be, for example: queries from exchange programmes, update requests from
Windows, anti-virus programmes etc. or time server queries from the router or from Windows.
In case of doubt, disconnect the router from the mains or the DSL modem when it is not in use,
if you do not have a flat rate or a volume tariff!
• After turning on the router (or a reset), it takes at least 30-40 seconds until the router can be
used by a computer (e. g. to access the configuration menu).
• When you are using WLAN, it is absolutely necessary to activate encryption. We recommend
you use WPA2 since WEP, for example, does not offer enough security.
Additional security against unauthorised access via WLAN or LAN could be established, if you
only allow MAC addresses of the network cards and adapters you are using (MAC filtering).
The MAC address for a network card or a network adaptor (e.g. USB) can be displayed in
Windows XP/Vista/7 by using the prompt and entering the command „ipconfig/all" (e.g. cha-
racter string „B4-34-54-23-A3-C2").
