Safety Instructions
Only trained professional electricians may
install, startup, modify, and retrofit this
equipment! Disconnect the device / system from
all power sources prior to starting any work! If
installation or system errors occur, line voltage
may be present at the control circuit in devices
without DC isolation!
Observe all electrical safety regulations issued
by the appropriate technical authorities or the
trade association. The safety function can be
lost if the device is not used for the intended
purpose. Opening the housing or any other
manipulation will void the warranty.
Caution!
If the device has been subjected to improper or
incorrect use it must no longer be used, and the
guarantee loses its validity. Impermissible
conditions include:
strong mechanical stress, for example through a
fall, or voltages, currents, temperatures or
humidity outside of the specifications.
Before starting up your machine/plant for the
first time, please be sure to check all the safety
functions according to valid regulations, and
observe the specified test cycles for safety
equipment.
Caution!
Perform the following precautionary steps prior
to installation, assembly, or disassembly:
1.
Disconnect supply voltage to the equipment
/ system prior to starting any work!
2.
Lockout/tag the equipment / system to
prevent accidental activation!
3.
Confirm that no voltage is present!
4.
Ground the phases and short to ground!
5.
Protect against adjacent live components
using guards and barriers!
6.
The devices must be installed in a cabinet
with a protection class of at least IP 54.
Caution!
Limited contact protection! Protection type
according to DIN EN 60529.
Housing/terminals: IP 40/ IP 20.
Finger-proof acc. to DIN VDE 0660 Part 514.

Device and Function Description
ESR4-NE-42 The supply voltage for the unit is lead by one of the output enabling current paths of the
basic unit connected to it. After the supply voltage is applied, the relays K1 and K2 switch into their operat-
ing position. After this switch - on phase the four safety output contacts 13/14, 23/24, 33/34, 43/44 (ESR4-
NE-42) or 17/18, 27/28, 37/38, 47/48 (ESR4-VE3-42) close and the feedback contact Y1/ Y2 opens. The
status of relays K1 and K2 is indicated by two LEDs. If the E - Stop button is pressed the enabling current
paths of the basic unit open and the relays K1 and K2 of the ESR4-NE-42 are de - energized. The safety
output contacts open and the feedback contact closes. The feedback contact Y1/ Y2 prevents the re -
activation of the basic unit in case the relay K1 or K2 should not be de - energized.
ESR4-VE3-42 The function corresponds to the one of the ESR4-NE-42. The ESR4-VE3-42 is available
with OFF - delay time 3 s. The item has a time back - up, so that in case of failure of the external power
supply the internal relays K1 and K2 stay energized until the OFF - delay time t
- out the relays K1 and K2 go back into their off - position. The OFF - delay times > 0 s correspond to Stop
Category 1.
Proper Use
The device is only to be used as an expansion device for safety switching devices.
Notes
•
The actual Safety and Stop Category of the device always depends from the corresponding
category reached by the connected basic unit. The Safety and Stop Category of the expansion
unit can only reach the max. Safety and Stop Category of the basic unit.
•
The ESR4-VE3-42 can be used max. to safety category 3 acc. DIN EN 954-1.
•
The expansion device can be connected to one or two safety contacts of the basic unit
according to the safety level requested.
•
The device can be combined with all basic safety switching devices. The feedback circuit
Y1/Y2 of the device has to be connected to the RESET or to the feedback circuit of the basic
unit.
•
Insulation on external wiring should not be cut back more than 8 mm.
•
External fuse protection for the relay and the contacts should not exceed 6 A type gG.
•
If sensors with reed contacts or semiconductor outputs used pay attention to the peak current (see
technical data section control circuits).
Please observe instructions from safety authorities.
