Acute pain is usually immediate and of a short-term duration (less than 2 weeks). Acute pain
is a normal response to injury (or short term illness, surgical/ medical procedures), warning the
individual of danger and the need to seek help. If untreated, it can cause significant emotional and
physical disruption.
Chronic pain is one that persists, usually beyond 3 months, after its usefulness as an alarm signal
has passed and often long after the tissue damage has healed. It may be relatively constant, or it
may come and go. Chronic pain may not be directly related to the initial injury or condition and
should not be considered a normal state.
