Semaphore Stop Signal Sh0 / Sh1
Read the operating instructions and these
supplementary instructions carefully before
using the product for the fi rst time or install-
ing it. This product may only be used for the
intended purpose as outlined in this manual.
This model of a railway signal has been
designed for the installation in model train
layouts and must be connected to an ap-
proved transformer for model trains or a
digital command control system which is
powered by such a transformer in rooms
with low humidity. Any other use is consid-
ered unsuitable and the manufacturer is not
liable for any consequential damage.
Introduction
Viessmann digital semaphore signals are afford-
able and easy to install mechanically and electri-
GB
cally. The special low-speed-drive is located in the
housing fi xed to the signal which also contains the
digital decoder as well as the contacts for switch-
ing the power to the insulated rail section in front
of the signal. It is a true "plug-and-play" item; no
electrical knowledge is required.
The semaphore distant signals can either be locat-
ed at the appropriate distance before the main sig-
nal or directly in front of a semaphore main signal
(indicating the aspect of the following main signal).
Placement of Semaphore Stop
Signals
Stop signals belong to the group of shunting sig-
nals and are used in many ways. Normally these
signals are located on the right hand side of the
track – when viewed in the direction of travel.
The prototype differentiates between train- and
shunting movements. While train movements are
taking place from station A to station B via the
main line, shunting is generally only permitted
within the station limits or in locomotive depots.
Main signals only control train movements, stop
signals are for shunting and for train movements in
conjunction with the exit signal.
Stop signals should be as close to the end of the
track as possible, that is directly in front of the limit
marker between converging tracks or at the begin-
ning of the point. The distance between the tracks
should be at least 52 mm (H0) to allow suffi cient
space for the signal. If the tracks are closer to-
gether we recommend to use the low height sema-
phore stop signal Viessmann type 4516.
If a track is used for train and shunting movements
the stop signal is located directly in front of the exit
4
signal. For semaphore stop signals the following
rule applies: the stop signal has to be set to "Sh1"
for both train and shunting movements (aspect
"movement not restricted"). On the model train
layout only the contacts of the stop signal are
used for train control when the semaphore stop
signal is located in front of the semaphore exit
signal. The contacts of the exit signal are not to
be used in this case.
Marking of stop signals
Stop signals are marked with the number of that
track where they are located. If several stop sig-
nals are located at the same track, they bear an
additional roman number which is slightly raised
(e.g. 4 I , 4 II , 4 III , ... Furthermore the letters "Hs"
are marked on any main stop signals.
Adhesive signs are supplied with the signal. Sim-
ply cut out the desired signs and attach them to
the signal after removing the protective foil (see
fi g. 5 at page 10).
Function test
Prior to installing the signal you should test all
functions of the signal. Connect the signal to the
DCC system temporarily (see fi g. 1 at page 8),
program the desired address and switch from red
to green and vice versa several times. The signal
should show the following aspects:
set to 'red'
Sh0 "No shunting"
Connecting the Signal
The digital signal is equipped with a slow-speed-
drive and the digital decoder. The decoder is
suitable for operation with the Märklin-/Motorola
format as well as with any DCC system as per
NMRA. Therefore connecting the signal is almost
child's play. There are two options for supplying
power to the signal solely from the digital system
as shown in fi g. 1 on page 8 or you may choose
the better option as shown in fi g. 2, namely to uti-
lize a separate power supply and thus reduce the
set to 'green'
Sh1 "Shunting
allowed"
