ARC-AIR GOUGING

This process is used whenever contraction cavities, pores, or slag inclusi-
ons have to be removed from workpieces. Other areas of use are, for
example, degating in foundries or for rough-working complete workpiece
surfaces. It can also be used for preparing the edges of steel plates in
welding shops.
START-UP (Fig. 15-17)
- Plug the power cable of the gouger into
secure by turning clockwise. (cable cross-section must be at least
70mm
).
2
- Link the compressed air connection on the gouger to the compressor.
Ensure a constant air pressure of between 5 and 7 bar.
- Connect and secure the earth cable to the MINUS socket
machine.
- Connect earth cable to the workpiece (ensure good contact).
- Fix carbon electrode so that at least 100mm of electrode is protruding.
Also, make sure that the air vents of the gouger are aimed downwards!
- Plug in mains plug.
- Shift mains switch
from "0" to symbol "1".
- The green control lamp
- The air fan should be operational: (check that air is being emitted at the
back of the machine).
- Shift selector switch
to ARC-AIR
- Set welding current according to table (Fig. 16) internally on the welding
current regulator
- Open the compressed air valve on the handle of the gouger (airflow rate
can also be adjusted here). The grooving process may be started.
- The depth of the groove is determined by the angle at which the
electrode is held, and by changes in the grooving speed.
- At higher amperages, the groover should be controlled using both
hands. (Protective helmet)
- Use hearing protection!

CARE AND MAINTENANCE

300
600
Under normal conditions of use, WTU 457/657 machines require a mini-
mum of care and maintenance. However, to ensure continued trouble-free
operation of your machine for years to come, a certain amount of basic
maintenance must be carried out.
- Check the mains plug and cable and the welding cable and earth
connection for damage from time to time
- Once or twice a year, remove the cover and side panels from the
machine
Caution! Switch off the machine and pull out the plug first!
- Clean inside of machine using compressed air (be careful! - blowing
compressed air directly onto some electronic components from a close
distance may damage them)
