SPECIAL FEATURES
The Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 1:2.8-4/24-90mm ASPH. is a high-speed zoom lens with Leica L bayonet
fitting. It can be used on Leica T cameras
1
as well as Leica SL cameras. On Leica SL models it acts as
a standard zoom lens with an extended focal length range - from pronounced wide angle to portrait
telephoto. Furthermore, it has extremely short minimum focusing distances, which result in large
maximum image scales.
The Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 1:2.8-4/24-90mm ASPH.is characterized by its excellent contrast rendition
and the highest resolution, even with an open aperture, at all focal lengths and from infinite right up to
close range. All image errors are corrected well or are compensated for digitally inside the camera.
Although stopping down results in a further, slight increase in performance, in most cases it is not
necessary for reasons of image composition with depth of field.
A total of 18 lenses, divided into six movable modules, are used to achieve this performance. In
addition to the five aspherical surfaces, there are eleven lenses with anomalous partial dispersion to
correct chromatic image errors. The high-quality coatings on all lens surfaces help to ensure low
reflection and light scatter.
Focusing is by means of moving a relatively small and light single lens. Together with the drive system
comprising a step motor and a linear guide, this results in a very fast autofocus function. The fact that
the length of the lens does not change during focusing thanks to this method of construction benefits
its handling in use. The highly effective optical stabilization function integrated in the lens also works
with a very light single lens. Both focusing and stabilization are also very quiet.
The sturdy metal construction and the protection against dust and splash water mean that the lens
can also be used in adverse conditions.
Summary: The Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 1:2.8-4/24-90mm ASPH. combines a versatile range of focal
lengths and extremely good performance, from the infinite setting right up to close-up, with open
aperture just as much as when stopped down. In this way, with its sturdy, weather-proof construction
and its shutter speed that is only slightly slower than that of fixed focal lengths, it can increase the
photographer's flexibility, e.g. in areas such as travel and reportage photography, sport and action
shots just as much as portraits and close-ups.
