1. Choosing a place for the microscope
Before starting, choose a sufficient location for microscoping. Please take care that your
microscope stands on an even and solid ground.

2. Getting started

The expedition microscope is preassembled and ready to use. Before use, just insert the supplied
10x eyepiece in the eyepiece holder and 2 batteries (type AA, 1.5V) in the battery compartment.
Open the battery compartment cover by loosening the two knurled screws and slide the cover
plate away to the side. Insert the batteries as required and close the cover again.
Pull the eyepiece holder out and lock it in the upper position by a ¼ turn counterclockwise.
This is the only way to reach proper focus, otherwise the travel of the focus mechanics will not
be sufficient. Insert the eyepiece into the eyepiece socket. Insert a microscope slide into the
clamp of the stage. The specimen with cover glass is inserted upright (i.e. cover glass on top).
The objectives are suitable for slides with thickness between 1.0-1.5mm. No special plankton
chambers etc. with cover glass bottom are required, thus reducing material cost significantly.
3. Observation
Switch on the light with the toggle switch. Start with the lowest magnification (4x objective)
to scan through your sample. The objectives 4x and 10x produce an image with a type of
dark field contrast, i.e. sample components appear bright against a dark background. The 40x
objective is equipped with a phase ring so that samples are viewed in phase contrast. Objects
appear brightly contrasted against a grey background. In phase contrast, even the smallest,
colourless and translucent objects and organelles (e.g. flagella) can be detected more easily
than in brightfield. For plankton this is the method of choice.
To store or transport the microscope in the smallest space possible, the microscope can
be disassembled without tools. Loosen the knurled screws that connect the illumination
housing with the base, and then loosen the knurled screws on the cross table and remove the
crosstable. Store microscope body and parts in a padded bag or case.
If the illumination in the field is not ready (e.g. batteries empty), the microscope can also be
operated with ambient light only. To do this, simply remove the housing of the illumination. The
