temperature stay high for more than 18 days after
the initial rise, the expectations of a pregnancy
are good.
Use in contraception
The fact that the female egg is only continuously
viable for a few hours means that even the day
after ovulation it will probably not let itself be fer-
tilized. However, we naturally want to be sure that
the recorded temperature rise is actually a result of
ovulation and not caused by other factors such as
stress, a cold, change of climate, lack of sleep etc.
According to Prof. Döring, one recognizes the „right"
temperature rise by the fact that the increase occurs
within 48 hours or less and the temperature in the
following three days is at least 0.2°C higher as in
the previous 6 days. The first of the three days with
increased temperature is then the temperature rise.
This is followed by two periods of conception free
days which will be explained in the following „
temperature method" paragraph.
a) The temperature method
This method is regularly confused with the „cal-
endar method" according to Prof. Knaus-Ogino
which is no longer considered to be reliable. In the
latter, the day of ovulation is more presumed than
measured whereas in the temperature method it is
®
measured. By using the special „
Cyclotest Lady"
thermometer, you can measure the fine variations
of the basal temperature, record the value in the
period chart and thus see when your possible
conception and conception free periods are. With
the „strict form" of the temperature method
(sexual intercourse only from the third day of the
temperature rise till the onset of menstruation),
you achieve almost the same reliability as the
pill – and this in a perfectly natural way without
taking medication or using mechanical methods.
As Prof. Döring in „Obstetrics and Female Thera-
peutics" 4/85 points out, the „strict form" of the
temperature method (Pearl-Index 0.8) and the pill
(Pearl-Index 0.25-0.5) are right at the top of the
reliability scale.
