PROBLEM
Foul smell

CAUSE(S)
There is too much food.
There are not enough worms.
There is too much nitrogen-rich
matter (green and fresh matter).
The bedding is soaked with water,
and the bottom of the
vermicomposter needs oxygen.
Possible problems:
▸ The bedding is too damp.
▸ The bedding is too acidic.
▸ Bedding conditions are not
conducive to worm activity.
Food is exposed to air.

SOLUTION(S)
Reduce the food supply or
get more worms.
Balance the system by adding
carbon-rich matter (newspaper,
dead leaves, dried straw etc.).
Add dry shredded sheets of
newspaper or dead leaves to the
bottom of the vermicomposter,
and mix them in with the bedding.
Partially open the lid and reduce
the supply of food for a while.
Solutions:
▸ See above.
▸ Add dried powdered egg shells.
▸ Harvest the vermicompost and
start again with fresh bedding
and 500 g of worms.
Always cover waste with
carbon-rich matter.
