Inserting/Replacing the Batteries

Alkali-manganese batteries are recommended for the measur-
ing tool.
MT100/MT102: Replace the batteries as soon as the battery
indicator 8 flashes.
MT200/MT202: Replace the battery as soon as the battery
indicator 17 displays (
When inserting batteries, pay attention to the correct polarity
according to the representation on the inside of the battery
compartment.
Always replace all batteries. Use only batteries of the same
brand and with the same capacity.
 Remove the batteries from the measuring tool when not
using it for extended periods. When storing for extended
periods, the batteries can corrode and discharge them-
selves.
Operation

Initial Operation

 When operating the measuring tool, loud signal tones may
sound under certain circumstances. The sound pressure
level of the signal tone can exceed 80 dB(A). Loud signal
tones may cause hearing damage. Therefore, hold the measur-
ing tool away from your ear or away from other people.
 Protect the measuring tool against moisture and direct
sun light.
 Do not subject the measuring tool to extreme tempera-
tures or variations in temperature. As an example, do not
leave it in vehicles for long time. In case of large variations in
temperature, allow the measuring tool to adjust to the ambi-
ent temperature before putting it into operation. In case of
extreme temperatures or variations in temperature, the
accuracy of the measuring tool can be impaired.
Switching On and Off
 Do not hold the measuring tool close to your ear! The loud
audio signal can cause hearing defects.
MT100/MT102: To switch on the measuring tool, press the ON
button 4; to switch off, press the OFF button 10.
MT200/MT202: To switch on the measuring tool, press the
On/Off button 14. To switch the measuring tool off, press the
On/Off button 14.
When not using the measuring tool, switch it off in order to
extend the battery life.
Adjusting the Volume
MT100/MT102: To adjust the desired volume level, turn the
adjustment knob 2 in clockwise or anticlockwise direction.
MT200/MT202: To adjust the desired volume level, press the
buttons for volume control 19. The "+" button increases and
the "–" button reduces the volume.
When switching off the measuring tool, the volume level is
retained in the memory.

Adjusting the Sensitivity of the Sensor
Adjust the sensitivity of the sensor such that the relative maxi-
mum of the signal fluctuates above the signal of the object by
the value 60 – 70.
With this setting, the exact position of the sought object can be
determined relatively well, as the magnetic fields of smaller
metal objects or the surroundings can be excluded.
When several objects lie next to each other, reduce the sensitiv-
ity of the sensors in steps until receiving signal peaks that can
be clearly differentiated from each other.
MT100/MT102: Adjust the appropriate sensitivity of the sen-
sor by turning adjustment knob 1.
MT200/MT202: Press buttons 15 to adjust the desired sensi-
tivity of the sensor. The "+" button increases the sensitivity of
the sensor and "–" button reduces it.
When switching off the measuring tool, the selected sensitivity
of the sensor is retained in the memory.

Method of Operation

Audio Signal
A deep audio signal sounds when no ferro-magnetic object is in
the operating range. When locating such an object, the frequen-
cy of the audio signal increases analogue to the signal intensity.
The signal intensity depends on the following factors:
– Sensitivity of the sensor
– Size of the object
– Position and depth of the object
– Environmental influences
Numerical Signal Indication
The numerical signal indication 7 displays values ranging from
"0" to "99".
When no ferro-magnetic object is within the operating range
and the lowest sensitivity of the sensor is set, a value between
"0" and "5" is displayed. An increasing of the value signals the
approaching to a ferro-magnetic object and allows for conclu-
sions to be drawn as to object depth, range and size of the locat-
ed object.
MT202: A "+" or "–" in front of a value indicates the polarity of
the object. Whereby "+" corresponds with the north pole and
"–" with the south pole.
Analogue Signal Indication (Bar Diagram)
The bar diagram 9 expands analogue to the signal strength from
the centre outward.
MT202: The direction in which the bar diagram 9 strikes out, in-
dicates, on which side of the measuring point the centre of the
object is located.
Power-line Indicator (MT102/MT202)
Electromagnetic fields from high-voltage cables under ground
are registered by the tool electronics and converted to a flash-
ing signal.
The indication 5 ("Caution Power Line") appears on the display 6.
The distance or the detection range depends on the energy be-
ing transferred in the cable. When the cable does not conduct
current, it is not detected. The measuring tool only responds to
current frequencies of 50 – 60 Hz.
