Please take special care the
following steps on installation:
• Any electrical connection must be in good con-
dition and have zero resistance.
• The battery must be in good condition and have
sufficient capacity.
• The regulator housing needs a good ground
connection.
Installation:
• Remove old generator and regulator.
• Remove the existing 13T generator pinion and
reuse on alternator. Use loctite 243 on the shaft
thread. Check for the splines not extending the
pinion and do not use any oil slinger.
• Use existing 5/16" mounting bolts and a new
gasket.
• On engines that still have 1/4" generator mount-
ing holes, enlarge the mounting holes.
• Use the later (1958→) 13 T Big Twin gear. 14T
gears have to much lash.
• Install regulator so air can circulate by it. Any
OEM or aftermarket supports for solid state
regulators will do.

• Connecting the regulator: crimp the two round
connetors onto the two shorter wires. Connet
these to the alternator wires. The long wire
goes directly to the positive battery pole.
• After the bike has been running for awhile,
re-tighten mounting bolts.
• If a clunking noise is heard remove the alterna-
tor and retighten the gear. Make sure that the
splines are still not extending past the gear.
The alternator and regulator can
be tested the following way:
• Use an AC volmeter.
• Disconnect alternator an regulator.
• Start engine and read meter:
• 1500 rpm - 12 V
• 2000 rpm - 15 V
• 4000 rpm- 26 V
• slight tolerances are ok.
• If you have no readings, check the round con-
nectors, make sure the crimp the wires, not the
insulation.
• With the regulator still hooked up to the battery,
but not the alternator, place a DC volt meter
across the lead on the regulator just like you
did with the alternator. Do not start bike!! If you
get any volt reading :from these leads there is a
short in the bike somewhere. If no reading this
is good.
