Gel Battery
Warning Instructions and Safety Guidelines for Gel Batteries with Fixed Electrolyte
Follow the instructions on the battery, in the
instructions for use and in the vehicle operating
manual.
Wear eye protection during all work on the
battery.
Keep children away from acid and batteries.
Risk of explosion:
- Highly explosive electrolytic gas is generated
when charging batteries. It is therefore essential
that you pay attention to the following point.
Fire, sparks, naked lights and smoking are
prohibited:
- Avoid sparks when dealing with cables and
electrical equipment as well as sparks caused by
electrostatic discharge.
- Avoid short circuits
Risk of chemical burns:
Battery acid is highly caustic, therefore:
- Wear protective gloves and eye protection.
1. Important Information
It is imperative that you follow the instructions in this manual, as failure to do so can cause injury due to acid as well as damage to the battery.
The starter battery you have purchased is a gel battery. In this design, the battery acid is bound in a gel and therefore cannot escape, even in
case of damage to the battery housing.
Benefits of gel batteries:
- Very long service life
- Maintenance free
- Can be installed in many different positions
- Leak-proof and no escaping acid vapours
- Extremely low self-discharge rate
- Extremely high vibration resistance and cycle stability
In addition, due to the application of the recombination principle, the battery is totally maintenance free. Acid vapours generated in the battery are
converted back to acid inside the battery. For this reason the battery is completely sealed toward the exterior. Topping up with water is therefore
neither necessary nor possible. The battery must not be opened, as this would cause its destruction.
2. Putting into Service
Gel batteries are already filled with battery acid (bound in gel) and therefore must not be opened under any circumstances. Hence no further
preparation of the battery is required. For best possible performance, the battery must be fully charged before being put into service for the first
time (Section 4).
3. General Instructions
3.1 Installation & Removal
- Before installing and removing the battery, switch off all electrical devices to avoid possible sparking.
- When disconnecting the electrical connections, disconnect the earth cable (-) first. When connecting the electrical connections, make this
connection last. Acting in this way prevents the risk of a short circuit when using tools.
- Attach the battery securely to the motorcycle.
3.2 Storage
- The onboard electronics will drain the battery if the terminals are not disconnected. This can cause deep discharge and may destroy the
battery. If the vehicle is out of service for more than one month, the battery must be disconnected from all loads.
- Furthermore, all batteries self-discharge unless they are charged and discharged on a regular basis. For this reason, out-of-service
batteries must be charged every 3 months or permanently connected to a suitable charging device. For instructions on charging please
see Section 4.
- Filled batteries must be fully charged before storage (Section 4).
- Store batteries in a cool, dry place and protect against direct sunlight.
3.3 Maintenance
- Keep the terminals and battery surface clean, firmly tighten the terminals and grease with terminal grease. Monitor the state of charge of
the battery using voltage control and recharge if necessary (Section 4).
- This is a maintenance free gel battery. After being put into service for the first time, it must not be opened under any circumstances. This
would destroy the battery.
4. Charging the Battery
- Remove the battery from the vehicle before charging (Section 3.1).
- Only use suitable DC chargers with regulated charging characteristics for gel batteries. Please follow the instructions of the charging device
manufacturer.
We recommend the following chargers for 12 V batteries:
=> JMP 800 12 V (charging current: 0.8 A)
=> JMP 4000 12 V (charging current: 1 A/4 A)
The chargers are available from specialist dealers or online at www.motomike.eu.
- Do not switch on the charger until you have connected it to the battery. After charging, first switch off the charger and then disconnect the battery from
the charger.
- Charging current recommendation: 10% of the rated capacity in amps. The battery is fully charged if the charging voltage fails to increase within 2
hours.
- If the battery gets very hot during the charging process, stop charging and allow the battery to cool down before continuing the charging process.
- Ensure adequate ventilation when charging in enclosed spaces.
5. Product Quality
We provide JMT quality and thereby guarantee the proper processing of faultless materials, technically flawless execution and compliance with
relevant JIS / EN standards with regard to dimensions and performance.
If, despite strict manufacturing controls, a fault should occur for which we are responsible, we provide a guarantee for material and manufac-
turing defects occurring within the applicable warranty period (current statutory period 24 months). The warranty period begins on receipt of
goods by the customer. A prerequisite for any warranty claim is that the defect was not caused by improper use or overuse.
To process a warranty claim, please contact the dealer from whom you purchased the battery in question.
6. Information concerning the German Batteries Act (Deposit and Return)
6.1 According to Article 11 of the German Batteries Act (BattG), consumers are required by law to return used starter batteries.
6.2 Starter batteries can be returned to one of the seller's outlets at no charge (due to the Ordinance on Dangerous Goods they must not be
sent in the mail).
6.3 Starter batteries contain lead and therefore may not be disposed of with household waste. For this purpose, they bear the symbol of a
crossed-out waste bin with the supplement "Pb" (lead).
6.4 According to Article 10 of the German Batteries Act (BattG), when purchasing a new starter battery without returning a used battery, consu-
mers must pay a deposit of € 7.50. This is refunded upon returning a used starter battery.

First Aid:
- In case of acid splashes in the eye, rinse immedi-
ately with clean water for several minutes. Then
consult a doctor without delay.
- In case of acid spills on the skin or clothing, neu-
tralise immediately with acid neutraliser or soapy
water and rinse with plenty of water.
- If acid is consumed, consult a doctor immediately.
Warning Instructions:
- Do not expose batteries to direct daylight without
protection.
- Discharged batteries can freeze; therefore protect
against frost during storage.
Disposal:
- Hand in used batteries at a collection point.
- During transportation, make sure that the filled
battery is secure against tilting and prevent a
short circuit on the positive terminal by means of
a protective cap.
