Specific Safety
Vacuum Tester and Brake Bleeding Safety
WARNING: ALWAYS ensure there are no naked flames or other ignition sources present when working with
fuel and braking systems.
WARNING: ALWAYS ensure adequate ventilation when working with fuel systems.
WARNING: This tool is NOT designed for vacuum testing of high pressure diesel engines.
WARNING: Brake fluid is flammable; keep away from sources of ignition including hot surfaces, e.g. exhaust
manifold.
• Be aware that failure of the workpiece or accessories, or even of the inserted tool itself, can generate high-
velocity projectiles
• Use of the tool can expose the operator's hands to hazards, including cuts, abrasions, heat and carcinogenic oils.
Wear suitable gloves to protect hands
• When operating the compression tester be aware of moving components within the engine bay
• DO NOT use the tool if there are signs of damage. Split hoses and damaged connectors could break abruptly,
causing serious injury
• DO NOT wear loose fitting clothing, neckties, jewellery, or other items which may become caught. Long hair
should be covered or tied back

• DO NOT hold pump inlet against the skin whilst using the pump.
Product Familiarisation
• DO NOT pollute the environment by allowing uncontrolled discharge of fluids
1. Vacuum Pump
• Brake fluid will damage paintwork. Any spillage should be flushed with water immediately

Before Use
11. 560mm Vacuum Hose
• Inspect the general condition of the system to be tested and vacuum gauge tester. Check for binding of
12. Pump Handle
moving parts, damage or any other condition that may affect safe operation
13. Pressure Release Switch
• DO NOT use damaged equipment
14. Gauge
• Identify the size and type of fitting required for the test
• This vacuum tester and brake bleeding kit includes fittings suitable to fit various vehicles
• The vehicle systems to be tested must be in good working condition to carry out a reliable test
Operation
WARNING: ALWAYS wear eye protection as well as suitable gloves when working with this tool.
WARNING: Always keep well away from any hot/moving engine parts. Take care to keep the compression
tester from becoming entangled in moving parts.
The following applications are just a few examples of tests that can be carried out by the vacuum tester kit.
Note: These are examples ONLY and manufactures' manuals should ALWAYS be referred to for correct testing
procedures and vehicle specification. Additional testing should be carried out to confirm the readings given on
the vacuum tester.
Fuel System Testing
Fuel Pump Testing
The vacuum tester can be used to test the vacuum created by mechanical fuel pumps. To test:
1. Remove the suction line to the pump and connect the vacuum tester to the suction port on the pump
2. Start the engine and run at idle speed. The reading on the Gauge (14) will vary slightly depending on the
vehicle model but in general the pump should create approximately 15inHg of vacuum
3. Vacuum should remain for approximately one minute after the engine has stopped running. If the correct
readings are not achieved then the fuel pump likely has an internal fault and would require overhaul or
replacement
Carburettor Testing
Carburettors have various types of vacuum control systems. One example of a test on a carburettor is listed below:
Choke Break Diaphragm Testing:
1. Run the engine to normal operating temperature then switch 'OFF'
2. Disconnect the vacuum line to the diaphragm module. Connect the vacuum tester and apply approximately
15inHg of vacuum (Fig. I)
3. After 30 seconds, no drop in the reading on the Gauge (14) should be observed. While vacuum is still present
ensure the choke butterfly is in the fully open position
Braking and Clutch Systems
Bleeding Braking System
WARNING: Read the specific manufacturer's instructions regarding the hazards of brake fluid before use. DO
NOT press the brake pedal while using this kit to bleed the brakes.
WARNING: Always check the function of the braking system after bleeding to ensure that they are operating

correctly. Failure to do so may result in serious personal injury and injury to others.
• Connect the vacuum pump kit in the order illustrated in Fig. II
For the brake bleeding and wheel sequence procedure refer to specific vehicle manufacturer's instructions. If there
are no specific instructions from the vehicle manufacturer follow the steps below:
1. Remove cap on the vehicle's master brake fluid reservoir and top up the fluid to the max fill level
2. Attach the correct sized Brake Bleed Nipple Adaptor (8) to the bleed nipple on the first calliper to be bled,
usually the calliper closest to the master cylinder fluid reservoir
3. Operate the Vacuum Pump (1) by repeatedly squeezing the Pump Handle (12) until approximately 21inHg
vacuum is created
4. Open the bleed nipple on the calliper by turning a quarter of a turn to allow the brake fluid to be drawn through
5. When no bubbles are visible in the fluid as it passes through the 560mm Vacuum Hose (11) tighten the bleed
nipple on the calliper
6. Remove Adaptor from bleed nipple
7. Repeat the process for the other callipers on the vehicle as required
Note: Ensure the brake fluid level in the master reservoir does not drop too low and top up as necessary during
the bleeding process.
IMPORTANT: Empty the pump reservoir regularly and DO NOT allow to overfill as brake fluid will be drawn up into
the vacuum pump and will damage the pump internally.
Bleeding Clutch System
If there are no specific instructions given by the vehicle manufacturer follow the same basic procedure as the brake
bleeding instruction above.
