SURROUND/REAR SPEAKERS
Cinema
surround/rear speakers vary by system. They may be direct radiating (like the front speakers) or Adapted
Dipole (ADP
) surrounds/rears (model name will include "ADP") .
Direct-Radiating Surround Speakers should be kept well away from the listening area for optimal surround-
sound performance.

Surround Speakers are designed to be used with their drivers firing toward the front and back walls
to ensure a large reverberant soundfield.

Rear Speakers should be positioned with drivers firing toward the side walls and each other ensuring
a large reverberant soundfield in the rear.
Surround/rear speakers may be wall mounted (refer to the section on Wall Mounting later in this manual) ,

on PARADIGM
speaker stands, or placed on shelves or high furniture (i.e. bookshelves). If placing ADP's on
shelves or high furniture, make sure there is at least 18 inch (45 cm) of free space on either side of the speaker.
If mounting in a corner, see your Dealer for more information.
A NOTE ABOUT THE SUBWOOFER: In the speaker configurations that follow, the ".1" represents the low-
frequency effects channel handled by the subwoofer. All home theater requires the use of a subwoofer(s)
to provide deep bass, giving dynamic power to low-frequency effects in movies and low bass content in

SURROUND-SOUND CONFIGURATIONS
5.1 Surround Configuration
Direct-Radiating Surround Speakers
Position speaker on each side of the listening area as shown in Fig. 9a.

Surround Speakers
Side-Wall Placement: Position speakers on each side of listening area, as shown in Fig. 9b.
Corner Placement: Alternatively, position speakers in each of the adjacent back corners as shown in Fig. 9c.
They can also be moved out from the back corners (maintaining the same angle position) and placed as close
as 3 ft (1 m) from the main listening area.

Rear Speakers
With its large, reverberant soundfield, an ADP
surround-sound system. Place one ADP
toward the side walls (nameplate "points" toward listening area).

Direct-Radiating Rear Speakers
Position behind the listening area—one speaker slightly right and other slightly left, as shown in Fig. 9e.
Keep direct-radiating speakers well back from the listening area for better surround performance.

Position behind the listening area—one speaker slightly right and the other slightly left, as shown in Fig. 9e.
Drivers should be firing toward the side walls and each other to ensure a large, reverberant soundfield
(nameplate "points" toward listening area).
