Safety Regulations
Correct Use
The motionSCOUT (hereinafter referred to as instrument) is a highly sensitive motion
sensor and may be used as alarm instrument and/or personal distress instrument
(immobility alarm). A Personal Alert Safety System senses movement or lack of
movement and activates manually or automatically an audible and optical alarm signal
(which can also manually be activated) to alert and assist others in locating a person who
is in danger.
It is imperative that this operating manual be read and observed when using the
instrument. In particular, the safety instructions, as well as the information for the use and
operation of the apparatus, must be carefully read and observed. Furthermore, the
national regulations applicable in the user's country must be taken into account for a safe
use.
Danger!
This product is supporting life and health. Inappropriate use, maintenance
or servicing may affect the function of the device and thereby seriously
compromise the user's life.
Before use the product operability must be verified. The product must not be
used if the function test is unsuccessful, it is damaged, a competent
servicing/maintenance has not been made, genuine MSA spare parts have
not been used.
Alternative use, or use outside this specification will be considered as non-compliance.
This also applies especially to unauthorised alterations to the apparatus and to
commissioning work that has not been carried out by MSA or authorised persons.
Liability Information
MSA accepts no liability in cases where the product has been used inappropriately or not
as intended. The selection and use of the product are the exclusive responsibility of the
individual operator.
Product liability claims, warranties also as guarantees made by MSA with respect to the
product are voided, if it is not used, serviced or maintained in accordance with the
instructions in this manual.

Construction
The instrument consists of a sturdy and waterproof plastic housing. The housing contains
three LED indicators confirming the proper operation.

Thermal Warning
When the operational temperature range of the instrument has been exceeded it will emit
a two tone sound (Hi-Lo) every 2 ½ seconds while this condition persists.
Attention!
Avoid Overheating! When the thermal warning is given, remove the
instrument to a cooler environment. Otherwise, it may cause degradation or
the system may become inoperative.

Use
Attention!
In the event of damage the instrument must be removed from the
hazardous area.
The instrument must be carried on the body in the hazardous areas.
Electromagnetic radiation (radio transmissions) may cause interference.
Minimize nearby radio transmissions if excessive interference occurs.
Switch version
1. Clip the instrument to the belt/harness in a suitable position.
2. Push the ON / OFF button for approx.
1 second. The instrument will emit an
alarm sound for a two seconds test period.
The Status LED will flash to indicate that
the instrument is switched on.
3. In the event the users remains motionless for approx. 25 seconds, the instrument
will emit a pre-alarm warning for approx. 15 seconds (UK version approx. 8 sec) at
increasing sound level. Movement will cancel this pre-alarm immediately.
4. If the user cannot move during the pre-alarm period, the full alarm will sound after
approx. 15 seconds (UK version approx. 8 sec).
5. The instrument can also be operated manually. Simply press the alarm button. Once
activated the alarm can only be cancelled by switching OFF the device.
6. If the instrument is equipped with the manual alarm reset function, you can simple
cancel the alarm by pressing the alarm button twice within one second (does not
apply to UK versions).
7. To switch OFF the instrument push the two
buttons (ON / OFF and then Alarm) for min.
4 seconds at the same time.
8. When the battery is near the end of its life, the instrument emits a short acoustic
warning followed by a red flashing of the Status LED.
Maintenance and Cleaning
There are no serviceable parts inside the instrument. In order to maintain the instrument
in proper condition it should be kept clean with a damp cloth using soap and water.
Battery fitting
Do not open the instrument in hazardous (Ex) areas. Use only specified
batteries, watch polarity.
1. Remove battery cover (screw off back panel), insert and connect the two batteries.
2. Replace battery cover and screw down firmly. The instrument is now ready for use.
