B) Factors that influence blood pressure measurement
• The patient's own effort to support the arm may raise the blood pressure.
• If the brachial artery (artery in the upper arm) is much below heart level, blood pressure
appears falsely high. To correct for this, subtract 0.8 mmHg for each 1" (2.54 cm) of vertical
distance your arm is below the level of your heart.
• Conversely, add an equivalent number if the arm is above the level of your heart.
