Use of oil check indicator
To assess the compressed air temperature, an adapter
() with an oil check indicator is mounted on the head of
the filter/absorber. When the needle valve (3) is opened
fully, a specific volumetric flow will pass through the
detector tube (5). The oil residues in the compressed
air cause the detector tube to turn red from the bottom
upwards.
Important information :
1. The oil check unit is designed to allow measurement
without danger to operating personnel. However, prior
to measurement it must be checked that the detector
tube connection (4) is firmly screwed on before open-
ing the needle valve (3).
2. The unit incorporates a pressure reducer () upstream
of the needle valve (3) to reduce the pressure at the
detector tube to a maximum of 7 bar. With higher
operating pressures, 7 bar should therefore always
be used as the standard value for the determination
of the oil content.
3. The usability period of the oil check indicator is limited
by the measurement duration (several days or con-
tinuous in the case of low oil contamination) and the
oil content of the compressed air. When the detector
tube has turned red from bottom to top, it will need
to be replaced:
- Close needle valve (3)
- undo threaded connection (4)
- install new detector tube (5)
4. When the oil check indicator is used in areas with moist
compressed air, a pink coloured section will appear
above the red coloured section. This pink section
should not be taken into account for the assessment
of the oil load.
5. The oil check indicator must be mounted in a vertical
position.

The data sheet (page 26, 27) included with the Instruc-
tions for Installation and Operation can be used for
documenting the compressed-air quality check.
The duration of the oil check depends on the quality of
the compressed air. Where the oil content is expected to
be below 0.01 mg/m³, the check duration should exceed
500 h, so that continuous measurement would then be
the most convenient method.
The applicable check duration should be chosen by the
operator on the basis of experience and the speed of
the colour change to red.
Recommended check duration related to oil contents :
Check procedure :
a) Start
Make sure that the detector tube connection is firmly
screwed on, otherwise there is a risk of injury because
the detector tube could shoot out when the needle valve
is opened.
- Prepare the check log: name, date, starting time,
operating pressure, temperature, scale value of red
coloured section
- Mark the current position of red colouring (existing oil
load inside detector tube)
- Fully open the needle valve upstream of the oil check
indicator for a specific period (see recommendation)
b) End
Mark the new position of red colouring on detector
tube
- Enter details in check log: name, date, time of start,
operating pressure, temperature, scale value of red
coloured section, additionally value of scale section
turned red during the oil check, check duration (in
hours), operating pressure
c) Calculate the oil load of the compressed air
- On the basis of the relevant quantitative colouring,
check duration and operating pressure, the oil load is
determined using the following chart:
1
mg/m³ :
5 h
0.1 mg/m³ :
50 h
0.01 mg/m³ : 500 h
