Crushing injuries: Large magnets have a very strong
force of attraction! If handled without due care, fingers
or skin may get squashed between two magnets. This
can result in severe crushing injuries and bruising.
Very large magnets are so strong they can even
break bones. Wear protective gloves for larger mag-
nets!&#NaN;&#NaN;
Pacemaker: Magnets can impair the functionality of
pacemakers and implanted defibrillators. A magnetic
pulse could put the pacemaker into a different mode.
Under certain circumstances, a defibrillator may cease
to function altogether. If you are using such devices,
make sure that you keep sufficient distance from
magnets. Also make sure to warn other people using
such devices.
Heavy objects: Extreme or sudden loads, material
fatigue and material faults can cause a magnet to work
loose from the surface it adheres to. Falling objects
can cause serious injuries. The values stated for ad-
hesive force are only achieved under ideal conditions.
Always include a high safety factor in the calculations.
Do not use magnets in places where material failure
can result in injuries to people.
Metal fragments: Magnets are brittle. An uncontrolled
impact can make them break into tiny fragments.
Sharp fragments can be flung yards away and can
also cause damage to your eyes. Prevent uncontrolled
impacts of magnets. When handling larger magnets,
wear safety goggles and ensure that anyone else in
the vicinity is protected or keeps a safe distance.
