3.) Vertical applications
To minimise pendulum falls, the anchor point should always be as
perpendicular as possible to the person. The minimum required fall
clearance beneath the standing surface is calculated by individual
elements of the system (fig. 2): Fall arrest block stopping distance (Δl)
+ safety margin (1 m) + where applicable, anchorage system stretch
(observe the manufacturer's user instructions for the safety harness) =
min. RD
4.) Horizontal application of the HSG PRO
The HSG PRO has been developed for use in horizontal orientations.
To confirm suitability, various edge tests (steel edge radius = 0.5 mm
without burrs) were carried out and the devices were certified
accordingly. On the basis of these tests, the fall arrest blocks are
suitable for horizontal applications. To protect the label and to ensure
it is more easily read during use, we recommend placing the unit on a
horizontal surface with the label facing upwards. The functionality of
the device is not affected by this. Regardless of these tests, the
following must be considered when using in a horizontal or diagonal
position where there is a risk of falling over an edge:
1. If the risk analysis, conducted before work begins, shows that the
fall edge is particularly 'sharp' and/or is 'not free from burrs', the risk
of falling over the edge must be eliminated or edge protection must
be installed.
2. The anchor point of the fall arrest block must never be below the
level of where the user is standing.
3. The angle of the edge must be at least 90°. ATTENTION: The
HSG COMPACT is not suitable for horizontal applications!
5.) Use
5.1) Prior to using the device, it must be checked for signs of a fall,
including a visual inspection and functionality test. First of all, inspect
the unit, including the full length of the retractable lifeline, for damage
(tears, distortion, corrosion etc.). When doing so, make sure that the
lifeline easily pulls out and retracts . (Never release and allow it to
retract uncontrolled, always let it retract in a controlled fashion). To
test the locking function, give a quick and powerful tug on the line, in
order to verify that the fall arrest block locks. When conducting a
functionality test, listen out for any unusual noises (clattering etc.). If
any faults have been established, or any doubts exist about the safe
condition of the device, the fall arrest block must be removed from
use immediately and inspected by a competent person.
