1.) Standards (see Table 1)
2.) General information, fall arrest block type overview
When used in a fall arrest system with an anchor point and safety
harness, as per EN 361 (see fig. 1), fall arrest blocks (FABs) are used
exclusively for the safeguarding of persons exposed to the risk of a
fall during their work (e.g. on ladders, roofs, scaffolding etc.). The
user is able to move freely when ascending and descending. The
integrated spring allows the steel cable (HSG Edge)/PES webbing
(HSG Compact) to self-retract into the device. However, the pulling
force is so low, that the user barely notices it.
In the event of a fall, the device locks as soon as the speed of the fall
reaches about 1.5 m/s. Fall arrest blocks must not be used above
bulk material or similar materials in which there is the possibility of
sinking. In this instance, the lock-on speed is not reached and sinking
cannot be stopped. (Fig. 5.14)
Fall arrest blocks limit the energy created during a fall to such an
extent that the human body is able withstand this energy. Once a fall
arrest block has been deployed to arrest an actual fall, it must be
withdrawn from use and inspected by a competent person. If the
inspection findings are negative, it must be retired and destroyed!

Inspection and maintenance:

When supplied with a complete system, individual components must
not be replaced. The inspection (documented visual inspection and
performance test), which takes place at least once a year (as per
EN), must be carried out by a competent person in accordance with
DGUV 312-906 (i.e. pursuant to the national regulations for the
inspection of PPE).
