Foreword
In the early Middle Ages, stained-glass windows were only made by experienced artisans.
With simple tools and unending patience, the pieces of stained glass were assembled into
more or less artistic pictures. Impressive witnesses of this time are the ornaments that play
with light and colour in the windows in churches and cloisters.
At the end of the 19th century, Louis Comfort Tiffany invented a considerably easier method
of using stained glass. The lead for framing the individual pieces of glass was replaced by
copper foil. This made possible not only delicate ornaments, but also saved time. Many of his
designs are imitated daily by numerous hobbyists all over the world. The WSS 80 provides
for the successful soldering of these designs.

Techniques

In glasswork, a differentiation is made between two different glazing techniques.
1. Using lead profile
(Available in various widths with „H" and „U" profile)
The glass and the lead profile are cut to the correct size as per the pattern. Clean the glass
and slide into the profile. Press the sides of the lead against the glass using a blunt object
(e.g. piece of wood). Solder together the various parts (see also „Notes on Soldering").
2. Using copper foil
(Also called the Tiffany method)
This is the simplest method of soldering together glass. Once the pieces of glass have
been cut to size and cleaned, they are edged with the self-adhesive copper foil. The dif-
ferent parts are then arranged in the correct sequence (smooth inner side of the glass
upward). The ends are then tacked with a little solder. This is important to provide a
certain amount of flexibility for adjustment to the required shape. All joints are then evenly
soldered from outside and from inside. To achieve a good joint between the copper foil
and the solder, liquid flux is brushed on the foil prior to soldering. For the soldering itself,
solid wire solder (60% tin and 40% lead) is recommended (see also „Notes on Soldering").
The solder joints are then cleaned with warm soapy water. If desired, the joints can then
be „patinated". This is a treatment with a special liquid (patina) to remove the silvery
shine. The work piece looks older as a result.

1. Description

GB
The WELLER WSS80 Soldering Station is ideal for use on Tiffany glasswork, as it is safe and
easy to use. The special soldering iron bit accessories have been matched to demanding
glasswork tasks and are of the „Longlife" class. Longlife soldering iron bits have a galvanically
applied protective coating. The protective coating significantly lengthens the life of the soldering
iron bit. For this reason, this protective coating must not be damaged by filling or scratches.
The temperature of the WH80 soldering iron can be continuously adjusted and is electronically
controlled by an integrated temperature sensor. The soldering iron is electrically isolated
from the mains and works with a safety extra-low voltage, 24VAC. The temperature is set
using a rotary potentiometer over the range from 150°C – 450°C. A green light emitting
diode is used for an optical check on the regulation of the temperature set.
„Continuously illuminated" Signifies bit temperature is below the temperature set
„Flashing"
„Dot not lit"

The mains fuse (5) can be removed if required by gently pressing the fuse insert and turning
it slightly to the left.

2. Placing in Operation

Attach holder spring (9) with funnel to the base plate (10) of the soldering iron holder.
Soak cleaning sponge (11) with water. Place the soldering iron in the assembled safety
holder. Insert the soldering iron plug (8) in the 6-pole connecting socket (4) on the control
unit and lock by turning to the right. Plug the control unit into the mains, during this process
check that the mains voltage is correct.
