Fitting instructions for pre engaged starter motors
Congratulations on your choice, you have purchased a high-quality,
modern starter motor that is not only more powerful than the originals
due to its reduction ratio, but also requires less starting current and thus
also protects your battery. Below you will find instructions for electrical
connection.
Important!
When working on the electrical system, disconnect the battery first
For vehicles with pre-engaged starters, i.e. with integrated start magnet
(e.g. TR5/6, MGB from 68 etc.), the connection to the reinforced starter
is the same as for the original starter, i.e. the cable from the start relay or
ignition lock (usually white/red) is connected to the screw connection (+)
and the cable from the start relay or ignition lock to the plug connection.
With all other vehicles, which have an external start magnet switch (usu-
ally attached to the body or engine) some additional work is necessary.
Usually there are three connections at this start magnet switch; one
plug connection from the starter button or ignition lock (usually white/
red) and two screw connections, one from the battery (+) and one to the
starter. Since your new reinforced starter needs a permanent connection
to (+), clamp the cable leading to the starter with the cable coming from
the battery (+) to one pole (no matter which one). Now make a sufficiently
long cable with a cable cross-section of at least 2.5 mm2, with a suitable
ring connection at one end and a suitable plug connection at the other
end. Now connect this cable with the ring connection to the free connec-
tion of the magnetic starter switch, connect the plug connection to the
connection on the starter motor. Your start magnet switch now fulfils the
function of a start relay.
For vehicles with (+) to ground, proceed accordingly, i.e. connect the (-)
cable coming from the battery with the cable leading to the starter.
If you have any further questions, we will be happy to help you.
