Replacement Interval Guide

The OEM has not recommended a timing belt
replacement interval for this engine.
1989-91
Typical trade practice indicates that, as a
precaution, the timing belt should be replaced at
60,000 mile intervals.
The previous use and service history of the vehicle
must always be taken into account.
Check For Engine Damage
CAUTION: This engine has been identified as an
INTERFERENCE engine in which the possibility of
valve-to-piston damage in the event of a timing belt
failure is MOST LIKELY to occur.
A compression check of all cylinders should be
performed before removing the cylinder head.

Remove & install:
80/90/100 Coupe/quattro
200 Turbo/quattro
Special Tools
Extension spanner – No.2079.
º
Special Precautions
Disconnect battery ground cable.
º
Do NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft with timing
º
belt removed.
Remove spark plugs to ease turning engine.
º
Turn crankshaft in normal direction of rotation
º
(unless otherwise stated).
Do NOT turn crankshaft via camshaft or other
º
sprockets.
Observe all tightening torques.
º
Removal
1. Turn crankshaft clockwise until No.1 cylinder at
TDC of compression stroke with camshaft j
flywheel timing marks j

2. Remove:
Accessory drive belts.
¡
PAS pump (do not disconnect hoses).
¡
Crankshaft pulley bolt j
¡
Upper and lower timing belt covers j
¡
3. Loosen the water pump nuts and turn the pump
clockwise to loosen belt.
4. Remove the crankshaft pulley/sprocket and timing
belt.
IMPORTANT: For maximum timing belt system
life, replace all tensioners and pulleys during
timing belt replacement.
NOTE: If necessary, install new O ring to water
pump before installing timing belt.
1. Ensure the timing marks j
2. Install the crankshaft pulley/sprocket with timing
belt engaged, ensuring the belt is not trapped
between the oil pump and sprocket.
3. Install the timing belt to the sprockets and pulleys in
the following order:
Idler pulley.
¡
Camshaft sprocket.
¡
Water pump sprocket.
¡

4. Ensure timing belt taut between sprockets on
non-tensioned side.
5. Turn water pump counterclockwise until belt can

6. Torque water pump nuts to 15 ft. lbs.
7. Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise and check
timing marks j
8. Install components in reverse order of removal.
9. Torque crankshaft pulley bolt j
NOTE: This torque figure only applies using
extension spanner.
