INTRODUCTION
The North Models 845, 850 & 855 Emergency Escape
Breathing Apparatus (EEBA) are designed and intended to
be used to supply breathable air for a limited period to permit
emergency escape from oxygen deficient or other life-threat-
ening gas or vapor atmospheres, at temperatures above
-25°F (-30°C) for Models 845 and 855 and 0°F (-18°C) for
the Model 850.
The Models 845 & 855 have a rated duration of 5 minutes,
and the Model 850 has a rated duration of 10 minutes. All
three are designed and intended for personal escape use
only.
The North Models 845 & 850 provide an average flow of
40 liters per minute of breathable air for their rated duration
and are intended for use in normal exertion escape situa-
tions. Examples of normal exertion would be walking or run-
ning on level ground. The Model 855 provides an average
of 75 liters per minute of breathable air for five minutes and
is intended for use in high exertion escape situations such
as running for long distances, climbing or carrying heavy
objects.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
This manual contains important information and must be
read and understood by all persons who may use or main-
tain this apparatus.
North EEBAs should only be used or maintained by persons
who are familiar with the instructions contained within this
manual.
TERMINOLOGY
Warnings, Cautions and Notes used in this manual have the
following significance:
Procedures and techniques that are considered important
enough to emphasize.
CAUTION
Procedures and techniques which, if not carefully
followed, will result in damage to the equipment.
NOTE
Procedures and techniques which, if not carefully fol-
lowed, will expose the user to the risk of serious injury,
illness or death.
DESCRIPTION
The Models 845, 850 & 855 each consist of:
•
an aluminum air cylinder (full rated capacity of 2216 psi
or 3000 psi depending on the Model) with an integral
cylinder valve and pressure gauge,
•
a detachable pressure reducing valve with an integral
flow control orifice,
•
an air supply hose,
•
a transparent hood with an integral deflector system
which forces the air to flow across the viewing portion
of the hood and,
•
a carrying bag in which the complete apparatus is
stored.
With its portable, lightweight air cylinder and compact carry-
ing bag, the EEBA is easily carried by the user until a life-
threatening atmosphere is encountered, and is then easily
operated for an emergency escape. A quick, positive method
of operation allows air to pass from the cylinder to a flexible
and transparent hood which can be quickly slipped over the
head without adjustment and offers protection to any wearer,
even those with beards and spectacles.
The EEBA may also be stored in standby locations, in areas
where a life-threatening atmosphere may develop—ready for
emergency escape use by persons working in the area—but
only if such persons are trained to use pre-planned escape
routes of 5-minutes or shorter duration for Models 845 and
855 or 10-minutes or shorter duration for Model 850.
In addition, the EEBA may be carried into contaminated
atmospheres by rescuers wearing long duration NIOSH
certified Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus to facilitate the
escape of trapped persons—but only if the escape can be
accomplished within the rated service time of the EEBA.
