6. Router Operating Modes

The router has four different operating modes. Depending on the operating mode selected,
there are different options for how access to internet can be performed or how the connection
from the computer to the router is established.
• Operating Mode "3G Wireless Router Mode"
In this operating mode, the internet connection is set up via an external USB-UMTS modem.
Computers can be connected to the router via WLAN and LAN. Initial configuration is also
possible via WLAN or LAN.
• Operating Mode "Wireless Router Mode (Gateway)"
Here, an external DSL or cable modem (with LAN connection) is used to set up connection
to the internet. The LAN port is here required for the modem. Configuration is performed via
WLAN. In operation, all computers can only connect to the router via WLAN.
• Operating Mode "Wireless AP Mode"
This operating mode serves to expand a present network with a WLAN access point. There
must already be a router (with or without WLAN) that is connected to the internet already.
Configuration is also performed by WLAN, since the LAN port is connected to the main
router. Computers can be only connected wirelessly to the wireless router.
• Operating Mode "Wireless Client Mode (Station)"
This mode is used to connect one or several computers in a public wireless network (e.g.
hotspot). Access to the router and configuration are only possible via a network cable. The
WLAN becomes a WAN port here, i.e. the public, wireless internet access is achieved via
the router's WLAN and passed on to the computers via the LAN port. It is also possible to
expand the router's LAN port with a network switch.
