LATHE
ASSEMBLING:
Speed:
2000 rpm with UNIMAT 1 you should not use a
higher speed for metal. Use 700 rpm for thicker work
pieces (from 16 – 20 mm).
The connection pieces must be fastened tight-
ly. In addition strengthen the tailstock and the coun-
tershaft with the small machine bed U7 or stabilizing
plates (162 470).
Fix the big slide U9 also on the wood plate
(from below by means of a screw and a slot nut, see
instructions page 37)! The handwheel should be easy
to turn (resistance against the slide's feed can press
the hand wheel from the slide).
Fix cross slide U3 with 3 screws on to the big
slide U9 (use the correct screws U38).
Firmly adjust the free movement of slides (they
should move without stopping).
Fix cutting tool with 2 clamping jaws (U49) on
the slide U3
(if the work piece is longer, fix the tool firstly on
the right and then on the left).
The cutting tool must be positioned exactly at
the height of the rotational axis of the work piece
(usually a small support blade U40 0,1 mm will fit).
Check the tension of the gear rim like at the
woodturning machine.
The tailstock U6 must be set exactly!! The
motor speed should slow down slightly when the
work piece is mounted.
Grease the center U54 of U6 and repeat fre-
quently. It should not stand out off the collets more
than 5 mm and should be as close as possible to
U6 (turn the hand wheel as far as possible to the
right).
The workpiece becomes warm during the
working process, it streches and presses against
the tailstock (then the turning speed of the motor
slows down) as a result, the tailstock has to be
loosened. After a break the work piece will cool
down and shrink, which means the tailstock has
to be readjusted.
This problem can be solved with the "rotating
center"
(accessory 162 450).
WORKING:
When working with the tool for outside turning
U53 start from the far right, turn U3 about 0,3 mm
forward (not enough is better than too much), turn
the handwheel of U9 with both hands without stop-
ping ("palm-grip" see instructions page 35, picture
6), choose the rate of feed (= turning speed on the
hand wheel) according to feeling (rather slower with
thicker chip removal). The motor speed can slow
down a lot, and a long chip should develop!
Start always from the right towards the motor,
the chip-removal always is the result of the feeding
of the big slide U9, never of the feeding of the
small slide U3 !!
Now polish the work piece with the chips (like
you do when turning), or use a polishing paste.
