4. If a value is displayed, then the component is in working
order and the threshold voltage of the component is
displayed ( approx 0.2 V in the case of Ge diodes, ap-
prox. 0.5 V in the case of Si diodes).
Measurement of capacitance
Discharge every capacitor before measurement!
Residual charge in the capacitor can destroy the
measuring instrument! Do not discharge the ca-
pacitor by short circuiting it; bridge the connec-
tions with a 100 KΩ resistor instead.
Never connect the measuring cables to a voltage
source. This will destroy the measuring instru-
ment.
For reasons of safety, measure to see if there is
any residual charge in the capacitor (use the DC V
range) before measuring capacitance.
B - 16
1. Turn the rotary switch to „CAP/Ω/•
and select capacitance measurement using the
MODE button („nF" is displayed).
2. Insert the plug of the red measuring cable in the V/Ω
measuring socket and the black measuring cable in
the COM measuring socket.
3. Connect the capacitor to be measured to the measu-
ring tips. Electrolytic capacitors must be connected
with the correct polarity (+ to red, - to black). Since
the charging processes in capacitors require a little
time, the display may be delayed by up to 30 sec.
This is not a malfunction, but is system-related. Wait
until the display is stable before reading off the value.
A defective capacitor is shown by a display of zero or
around zero in all ranges if it is open circuit. Please note
that electrolytic capacitors can exhibit considerable va-
riance within their tolerance range.
