Precautions
Consult the directions for the drug being administered for indications,
•
contraindications and warnings concerning its use before giving an iontophoresis
treatment.
The current setting should never exceed a comfortable level for the patient.
•
Advise the patient to report any sensation of pain or burning during the
treatment.
Avoid operation in close proximity (< 1m) to transmitting cellular (wireless)
•
telephones or two-way radios. Sudden unexpected changes in output could
startle the patient and create a hazard.
Avoid exposure to water. If accidentally immersed, remove the battery and drain
•
excess water. Air dry the device for 48 hours before operating.
The maximum recommended dosage is 80mA
•
A transient erythematic reaction can sometimes occur directly under one or both
•
electrodes. This mild histamine response, characterized by red, warm, raised
skin with occasional small white bumps the size of a pinhead, will usually
disappear within 12 hours of the treatment.
Patients with known skin sensitivities or allergies should be treated with lower
•
current settings and longer treatment times to reduce the risk of skin reactions.
During iontophoresis, electrical discharges (sparks) are possible that could ignite
•
flammable material or gases.
Adverse Reactions
Iontophoresis can cause transient inflammation of the skin, skin irritation or skin burns.
Advise the patient of this possibility before starting treatment. If a skin reaction does
occur, discontinue treatment and consult the prescribing physician. If a skin reaction
occurs, the patient should be evaluated for possible drug sensitivity.
