CI module (Common Interface)
A CI module is a decoder module for digital TV and radio channels that
comply with the CI standard.
To display coded channels, you will also need a released smart card from
the channel provider in addition to a CI module. A CI module for digital TV
and radio channels is often also referred to as a CICAM (Common
Interface Conditional Access Module).
Common Interface (CI)
Standardised interface for accepting exchangeable CI modules.
Conditional Access System (CA system)
A CA system encodes and decodes digital channels. A channel provider
encodes its channels before transmission for legal or economic reasons.
The signal is then decoded in the end device using a suitable CI module.
There are various providers of CA systems. Virtually all support the CI
protocol, i.e. suitable CI modules are available.

Smartcard
To decode coded DVB channels (digital TV and
digital radio), you will need a released smart card from the relevant
channel provider. The smart card authorises the TV user to decode a
specific package of channels.
Symbol rate
The symbol rate describes the volume of data that can be transmitted per
second. Most satellites use symbol rates 22 000 or 27 000 kBauds.
C/N: Carrier to Noise
Signal to noise ratio
The greater the pointer bar or number the better the reception signal
quality.
