4.2.5 Determining the dry density
Determination of the dry density (apparent
density) should take place by means of mois-
ture comparison and determining the dry
density according to ISO 3130 or DIN 52 183.
However, it can also be determined provision-
ally with a simplified quick method.
Quick method procedure:
▼ Measure the wood sample (length, width
and thickness in cm).
▼ Determine the weight in grams and esti-
mate the wood moisture in %. (For better
accuracy, the wood moisture percentage
can be determined in a Darr test.)
▼ Calculate
(100 x weight / volume) / (100 + wood
moisture x 0.5) = density
Example:
Length = 100 cm, Width = 12 cm,
Thickness = 2.55 cm; Volume = 3060 cm³
Weight = 1415 grams with 15 % moisture
Calculation of density = (100 x 1415 / 3060)/
(100 + 15 x 0.5) = 0.43 g/cm³.
This means, select density 420 with the
or
buttons and conduct the measurement.
