4.7 Telemetry t ransmission over coaxial cable
The SM84A / SM164A matrix is able to transmit telemetry data (pan & tilt and camera lens control) directly
along the coaxial cable to those receivers that are set up for this type of connection (DTRX3 equipped with the
DTCOAX or a DTMRX2). A normal coaxial cable of the RG59 type (or equivalent) is able to cover a maximum
distance of 350 metres (between matrix and receiver).
Between the input video of the matrix using transmission via coaxial cable and the video connector on
the receiver being controlled, there should be no active amplification device (such as video distributors or other
matrix/switcher models). We therefore strongly recommend a direct connection of the type: matrix video input
/coaxial cable/ telemetry receiver over coaxial cable (see the diagram for the Example of Installation in section
3.2).
Each input video identifies one and only one receiver address to which it is to be connected. Therefore
the coaxial telemetry receiver connected to input video n°1 of the matrix, should have the address n°1, the
receiver connected to input video n°2 should have the address 2 and so on. It is not possible to connect more
than one receiver in cascade using the same coaxial cable: for each input video it is possible to connect only
one telemetry receiver over coaxial cable. It is therefore possible to connect a maximum of 16 telemetry
receivers over coaxial cable (one for each input video) in the case of the SM164A matrix (8 in the case of
SM84A).
After setting up the connections, the matrix must be enabled for transmission by coaxial cable. Therefore enter
on-screen programming mode and follow the instructions (see the on-screen programming menu under the item
COAX Transmission and AUX Line).
4.8 PC conne ction
The SM84A and SM164A models can be connected to a Personal Computer, control the matrix and record
noteworthy events, when required, and process them using dedicated software.
The connection is made using a standard serial DB9 extension cable, female (PC end) – male (matrix end), in
which the contacts between the two DB sockets correspond numerically (1 with 1, 2 with 2, etc.).
The cable should not be more than 15 meters long.
The Macro protocol should be used for communication, as described in the Appendix. It is important to set dip
switches 7 and 8 to OFF.
