CTCSS (Continuous Tone Controlled Squelch System) is a tone code
sent when transmitting and cannot be heard.
The receiver will only reproduce the signal if the tone code of the
transmitting radiophone matches the tone code of the receiving ra-
diophone.
To prevent being disturbed by the signals of other PMR-446 radiop-
hones communicating on the same channel, you can set up a CTCSS
code.
In addition, the FR-58 is also provided with DCS codes. This type of
encoding works the same as the CTCSS codes, but DCS is a digital
encoding method
Because DCS encoding isn't used on cheaper PMR radiophones, the
DCS setting makes it more unlikely you'll be disturbed by other users.
ATTENTION:
It's not possible to set up both a CTCSS code and a DCS code. As
soon as you set up either code (see page 13), the other encoding
is automatically turned OFF.
Don't forget that the other party must set up the same CTCSS
code or DCS code on his or her radiophone to be able to communi-
cate with you.
WARNING:
Setting up a CTCSS code or DCS only means you can communi-
cate with each other without being disturbed by other radiophones.
Your communication is NOT private. Each radiophone without
CTCSS or DCS encoding or using the code 00, can listen in on
your conversation.
