Start up

Preventing leakage

6.1
All connections must be systematically checked for any leakage with an electronic leakage detector suitable
for the type of refrigerant.

Pulling a vacuum

6.2
Pull a deep vacuum on the installation to about 200 microns Hg.
We recommend that a vacuum is pulled simultaneously from both high and low pressure sides of the
system. This will help reduce the amount of time required to obtain an adequate vacuum and ensure a
low moisture level in the system.

Refrigerant charge

6.3
After pulling a vacuum in the system, break the vacuum by using the refrigerant specified on the compressor
identification plate. Charge into the liquid line between the condenser and the expansion device an
amount of refrigerant below that of the nominal charge, so that the pressure is above atmospheric pressure.
The remaining refrigerant can then be charged in vapour form into the suction line while the compressor
is running. Note: liquid refrigerant must not enter directly into the compressor. To prevent this occurring,
connect to the suction accumulator inlet if fitted or use an expansion device, either a capillary or orifice,
to "flash off" any liquid before it enters the compressor.
Charge the system with the remaining refrigerant vapour until the nominal operating conditions of the
installation are reached.
Important: Please read the following instructions carefully before switching on the installation.
Pre-start up check list
Before switching on the installation, make sure that:
1. The power supply voltage is compatible with that of the condensing unit.
2. Electrical safety devices are calibrated for the condensing unit.
3. Service valves are fully open.
4. Crankcase heaters are working.
5. Condensing unit fan blades rotate freely.
6. The installation is checked for any technical faults.
Check list after start up
After the installation has been running for several hours, carry out the following checks. Make sure that:
1. The voltage and current drawn are correct for the condensing unit.
2. Operating pressure is correct for the system.
3. Fan blades are rotating freely.
4. Superheat (10 K minimum) is checked.
5. The leak detection test is repeated.
Carry out a general inspection of the installation (e.g. Cleanliness, unusual noises).

Frequency of starts

6.4
The refrigeration system should be designed so that the compressor does not exceed 10 to 12 starts per
hour under any conditions.
