Determine the difference in the angle of tilt of the target lines at both ends of the reference
scale. If the difference in tilt is 6% for a reference length of 3 m, the distance is 50 m. The
following formula applies:

Instead of a 2 metre staff, a measuring tape can also be used as reference length by hanging
it from a tree for example, or a folding rule can be used by unfolding it to a length of two met-
res. In all cases the reference length must always be right-angled to the distance measured.
