Establishing lines of constant gradient (reference lines)
Version 1:
The observer's assistant moves the staff until the index scale on the clinometer
scale appears at the desired angle of slope, e.g. 8%. The point is marked and used as a basis
for the next measurement.
Version 2:
The assistant holds the ranging rod with the index scale, and the observer moves
with his clinometer until he sees the desired percentage reading.
Measuring differences in height (levelling)
Version 1 (Fig. 3):
The index scale is held at the same height as the clinometer (e.g. 1.50 m),
and a levelling staff is held or fixed pointing up or down (depending on whether the gradient
rises or falls) with the zero mark at the same height as the clinometer sight. The height can be
read on the levelling staff at the 0% (= horizon) mark of the clinometer scale.
