STYLE 997 TRANSITION
COUPLING ASSEMBLY
HDPE Plastic to Steel
PIPE PREPARATION
Victaulic Style 997 Transition couplings are
designed to connect HDPE pipe directly to
steel (or other IPS) pipe of the same outside
diameter. The design requires a standard IPS
grooved pipe, valve or fitting. Style 997 cou-
pling must be assembled with ridged gripping
teeth on the HDPE pipe and key section end
engaged into the IPS grooved pipe end.
Victaulic HDPE products are designed to
mechanically join high density polyethylene/
polybutylene
pipe
D-2447, D-3000, D-3035 or D-714, at ambient
temperatures and of wall thicknesses from SDR
35 to 7.3. Victaulic HDPE products have inte-
gral rows of gripping teeth in each side of the
housing which bite into HDPE pipe around the
entire circumference. The ridged gripping
teeth on Victaulic HDPE products are not
intended for use on PVC pipe. Victaulic lubri-
cant is NOT recommended for use on
HDPE pipe.
HDPE pipe brands we have tested indicate
that the working pressure of Victaulic HDPE
products are dictated by the working pressure
of the pipe. The pipe manufacturers listing is
dependent upon wall thicknesses, pipe compo-
sition and temperature. Pipe tolerances shown
in the charts are at 70°F and for rigid pipe with
SDR of 20 or lower.

1. SQUARE CUT PIPE ENDS: Pipe ends
must be cut square as shown "S" within ¹⁄₈"
(3.2 mm) on pipe 2 - 4" (90 - 220 mm) and
within ⁵⁄₃₂" (4 mm) on 5" (140 mm) and larger
sizes. Ensure pipe ends are clean and free from
damage or scratches within 1" (25.4 mm) from
ends. Remove cutting particles.
2. MARK PIPE: Using marking tool or a sharp
yellow marking pencil and measuring tape,
mark off each pipe end at ¹⁵⁄₁₆" (24 mm) for 2 -
12" (50 - 315 mm) sizes, 1³⁄₁₆" (30 mm) for 14"
(355 mm) size, 1⁷⁄₁₆" (37 mm) for 16 - 20" (400 -
500 mm) and at the insertion depth location
found on the insertion depth chart (shown on
page 7). Provide at least four equally spaced
marks on sizes 2 - 4" (90 - 220 mm), and marks
every 3¹⁄₂ - 4" (90 - 100 mm) on larger sizes.
3. PLACE GASKET OVER PIPE ENDS:
Place gasket over both pipe ends. Push ends
together until they butt. Align pipe marks with
outer edge of gasket.
NOTE: Space between pipe ends must never exceed ¹⁄₄"
(6.4 mm) on sizes 2 - 4" (90 - 110 mm) and ⁵⁄₁₆" (7.9 mm) on
sizes 5" (125 mm) and larger. Refer to Insertion Depth charts
on page 7.
