For Stair Railings
A Veranda Stair Rail Kit
makes it easy to construct
stair railings, using drilled rails
and 3-step, 4-step or 5-step
pre-manufactured pressure treated
stair stringers.
Installation
1
Install deck posts to support the railing on the
top and bottom landings of the stairs. Spacing
from inside edge to inside edge should be a
maximum of 6' for pressure treated posts and
a maximum of 3' 7" for cedar posts. The actual
spacing will depend on how the deck post is
fastened to the deck. Consult local building
codes or a recognized building professional.

2
Ensure that posts are plumb before beginning. Lay a drilled
rail with the holes facing up on the stair treads and centre it
against the posts for the bottom rail. Check that the space
between the last hole and the post at either end are equal.
Draw a line along the face of the rail where it meets the
upright post [Figure 1]. Then, subtract 1/4" from each end
to allow for clips and draw a new line [Figure 2].

Mark the left edge of the centre holes in both the top and
bottom rail [Figure 3]. The drilled holes in the bottom
and top rails must be exactly aligned to install the
balusters vertically plumb.
