PRIOR TO FIRST USE
Before using the appliance for the first time, proceed as follows: carefully unpack the
appliance and remove all packaging material. Keep the packaging (plastic bags and
cardboard) out of reach of children. After unpacking the appliance, carefully check it for
external damage that may have occurred during transport. Place the appliance on a heat-
resistant, flat surface, near a suitable earthed socket. Ensure sufficient ventilation space
above the appliance.
Clean the lid and ceramic bowl with warm water and a mild washing-up liquid. Dry these
components thoroughly. Ensure that all moisture is removed from them. Clean the metal
inner pan and exterior of the appliance with a damp cloth. Place the ceramic bowl in the
appliance. In spite of this prior cleaning, when using your slow cooker for the first time,
it is possible that you can sense a burning smell because of the production residues that
become hot. After using the appliance a few times, this smell will have disappeared. Check
that the voltage stated on the appliance's information plate matches the mains voltage of
your mains network. Insert the plug in an earthed socket.
COOKING WITH THE SLOW COOKER
Fill the ceramic bowl with a little water or with selected ingredients in boiling water. When
preparing meat and vegetables together, first place the vegetables in the bowl. Cover the
ceramic bowl with the glass lid. Switch on the appliance by setting the selector switch to the
required position. The on/off indicator led lights up.
Use LOW to slowly cook during the day or night. At the HIGH position, the cooking process
will go twice as fast. A dish that is cooked at LOW for approx. 10 hours, will cook in 4 to 6
hours at HIGH. If you select WARM, the slow cooker maintains a constant temperature once
the dish has been cooked and the correct temperature has been reached.
Do not take off the lid while cooking when this is not necessary. Taking off the lid often,
will slow down the cooking process.
CAUTION: when the lid is taken off, hot moist air escapes that could lead to burns.
Always pick up the lid by the knob and preferably use oven gloves.
After cooking, switch the selector switch to OFF and remove the plug from the socket.
CAUTION: the ceramic bowl may crack due to sudden changes in temperature. Therefore,
do not submerge the hot bowl in cold water.
• Always fill the ceramic bowl with boiling liquid, never with cold liquid.
• Always wear oven gloves when moving the slow cooker during use.
• Dried beans, such a red kidney beans, must always be soaked for a night and then pre-
1
cooked for 10-15 minutes before placing them in the slow cooker, in order to remove
any toxins.
• Beans from tins are added 30-45 minutes before the end of the cooking time.
• Rice, noodles and pasta are not suitable for long cooking times. Cook these products
2
separately and add them in the last 30 minutes.
• Do not place frozen meat or poultry in the slow cooker. All products must first be
3
defrosted thoroughly.
• When preparing a combination of meat and root vegetables, always place the root
4
vegetables at the bottom of the ceramic bowl.
• Do not fill the slow cooker up to the edge with food.
5
• Taking off the lid often, will slow down the cooking process. Do not take off the lid
during the first half of the cooking time.
• The times found in recipes are only guidelines. The actual cooking time depends
on different factors, such as the quality of the ingredients, the sizes of the different
pieces, the amounts, the number of times that the lid is taken off, etc.
Notes
Ensure that all the food is fully cooked before consuming it. When slow cooking, you are
preparing the products below boiling temperature. Liquids do not 'boil' at this temperature
and little steam or vapour is produced. Major advantage of this is that the food does not
burn and that stirring is hardly necessary. Slow cooking is not only practical, it also helps to
maintain the flavours and nutrients in your dish.
