REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS FOR APPLIANCES CONTAINING R290
i) 1. GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
1.1. Work area controls:
Before starting to work on systems containing flammable refrigerants, safety checks are
necessary to minimize any risk of ignition. To repair the refrigeration system, the following
precautionary measures must be observed before performing any work on the system.
1.2. Procedure for carrying out the work:
The work must be carried out according to a controlled procedure, so as to reduce to a minimum
any risk of the presence of flammable gases or vapours during the execution of the work.
1.3. General working area:
All maintenance personnel and others working in the local area should be informed of the nature
of the work being performed. Work in confined spaces should be avoided. The area around the
workspace should be partitioned. Make sure the conditions in the area have been secured by
checking for flammable materials.
1.4. Checking the presence of refrigerant:
The area should be checked with an appropriate refrigerant detector before and during work to
ensure that the technician is aware of the existence of potentially flammable atmospheres. Make
sure that the leak detection equipment used is suitable for flammable refrigerants, i.e. it does not
generate sparks, is properly sealed or is intrinsically safe.
1.5. Presence of extinguisher:
If hot work is to be performed on refrigeration equipment or any associated part, suitable fire
extinguishing equipment must be available. Have a dry powder or CO2 extinguisher near the
charging area.
1.6. Prohibition of all sources of ignition:
No person carrying out work in connection with a refrigeration system involving the exposure of
piping containing or having contained flammable refrigerant must not use an ignition source liable
to create a risk of fire or explosion. All possible ignition sources, including cigarettes, should be
kept sufficiently far from the location of installation, repair, removal and disposal, during which
flammable refrigerant may possibly be released into the surrounding space. Before starting work,
the area around the equipment must be examined to ensure that there is no danger of
flammability or risk of ignition. "No smoking" signs must be prominently displayed.
