2. What Is Powerline?

After Wireless LAN (WLAN) and cabled networks (LAN),
Powerline is the third way to set up a network that
connects computers and other multimedia products.
Powerline uses the building's existing electrical wiring
to transfer data. This procedure enables the system to
reach areas in which the WLAN signal is no longer suf-
fi ciently stable. To transfer data using the power supply,
the Powerline adapter fi rst needs to convert (modulate)
the data; it then transfers it to the electrical wiring. The
Powerline adapter at the other end takes the data from
the electrical wiring and converts it back into its original
format so that the connected computer can process it
further.
The data transferred in this way is encrypted by the
Powerline adapter (64 bit DES) to prevent interception by
a third party.

3. Range and Data Throughput Rate:

Powerline uses the building's interior electrical wiring,
achieving a maximum range of 200 metres.
The data throughput rate depends on the following
conditions:
1. The electrical installation: the quality of the electrical
wiring in older buildings is often not as high as in new
buildings.
2. The distance between the individual stations: As the
distance that is bridged increases, more of the signal
is attenuated.
Note:
If there is more than one electric meter in your building
(e.g. if it is a multi-family home) but you want to make the
network available to all parties, you need to have a phase
coupler installed by a specialist. This couples both elec-
trical circuits, ensuring continuous Powerline access. For
security reasons, Powerline technology does not allow
the data signal to be transmitted any further than the
meter box in order to prevent unauthorized interception.

4. Data Security:

Hama Powerline adapters come with integrated 64 bit
DES encryption, to guarantee secure data transfer within
the network. Therefore, it is not absolutely necessary to
provide additional encryption using other software.
If you still want to provide additional software encryption,
please consult the relevant sections below.

5. System Requirements:

Your computer must have at least the following equip-
ment in order to function with your Hama Powerline
adapter.
Hardware:
CPU:
Intel or AMD processor with 133 Mhz or
higher
RAM:
256 Mbyte or some operating
systems require more.
Network card: OnBoard or plug-in card with 10/100 Mbit
Fast Ethernet speed.
