Installation of a SATA Hard Disk
• Unlock the drawer at the back and pull it out.
• Where applicable, remove the plastic bracket insert from the drawer.
• Insert a 8.9cm SATA hard disk drive (3.5") and secure it in place with 4 screws. Only use
the special screws provided (inch thread, with flat head)
If there are is any data on the hard disk, a backup has to be made. After
installation the hard disk has to be partitioned and formatted, this causes all the
data on the disk to be lost!
• Slide the drawer with the hard disk drive back into the enclosure; pay attention to the
correct orientation. Open the locking bracket a little, to allow the drawer to be fully
inserted.
Secure the drawer with the locking bracket.
Start-up
www.conrad.com
• Switch on your PC and wait until the operating system has finished loading.
• Connect the network port „LAN1" to a free port on your network switch (or router) using
Version 09/09
a 1:1 connected network cable (e.g. the one provided).
°
• Connect the low voltage input of the network enclosure to the corresponding circular plug
on the power adaptor provided.
• Connect the power adaptor to the mains, using the power cable supplied.
• Switch the enclosure on (with the switch located on the rear).
• Provided you have a DHCP server in your network (integrated in every router), the
network enclosure is now assigned a free IP number from the address range for your
network.
Alternatively it can be assigned its own static IP address.
The network enclosure can take up to 1 minute to boot, before the network function is
available.
Software Installation
Insert the CD included in delivery into an appropriate drive on your computer and install the
software.
After this, an icon appears on the desktop or in the start menu, which can be used to launch
the software.
Using the software, the IP address of the network enclosure can be found easily and
configured and the web interface can be started, see next section.
Web Interface
The network enclosure has its own inbuilt web server, which can be accessed via a web
browser (e.g. Internet Explorer). All the settings for the network functions can be made from
here, such as formatting the hard disk, administering the FTP etc.
After starting the software (see above) the enclosure should be found, for example, with
the IP address 192.168.1.100 (if there is an active DHCP server in the router, distributing
the IP addresses below 192.168.1.x). Note what the software indicates.
The current IP address for the network enclosure is shown as „NAS Setting URL". If you
click on it, the standard web browser starts and tries to the connect to the network
enclosure.
After this, the user name and password have to be entered; the default setting is „admin"
for the user name and „0000" (4 numbers) for the password, each without quotation marks.
• You can change the menu language to „English", if it is not the default. The option is
found in the upper right corner of the web interface (at the time this manual was written,
a toggle between English and Japanese was intended; probably only English is available
with newer versions).
• When it is used for the first time, the hard disk drive has to be formatted before it can be
used. If there is data stored on the hard disk, please back it up first (on another hard disk)
since all data is lost during formatting!
Partitioning can be carried out using the file system „FAT32" (max. 160GB) or „ext3".
Please note that, it is only with the file system „ext3" that files larger than 4GByte are
possible.
• Depending on your chosen network configuration, the IP address for the network
enclosure can be static or it can be automatically assigned by the DHCP Server in the
network.
When using static IP addresses, please note that every IP address in the network must
only be used once. Furthermore, the „Subnet Mask" for all the devices has to be the same
(e. g. 255.255.255.0). For example, use the IP address range 192.168.1.x (x=1....254) in
your network.
If necessary, the antivirus-software or the firewall may have to be configured
as well before it is possible to access the disk.
If this input window does not appear, check the PC and router configuration (or
the DHCP device in your network). The PC or the network enclosure must be
configured so it is assigned an IP address automatically.
The network enclosure must be connected to the router via a 1:1 network cable
or network switch.
After turning on the network enclosure, it takes about 1 minute before the start-
up process is completed. Only after this can the configuration pages for the
network enclosure be accessed via the web interface.
In addition, please consult the provided manufacturer documentation, it may
accompany as a manual, or you will find it on the CD provided as a PDF file (to
view a PDF file, extra software may be required, for example „Acrobat
Reader", which you can download for free from www.adobe.com).
